Towed last year(Mexico/Alaska) with a mud flap and nothing else. Tore up the new Saturn pretty bad. Bought an old Jeep to take to Alaska and finished it off(all lights, windshield, etc.). Now using Protect-A-Tow with another Jeep(used)-not enought experience yet to let you know but it could not be worse than the mud flap! Have shortened the mud flap and changed its location but still think it should be removed on any serious trip-as it actually fills up the underside rear of the coach with dirt and rocks(fortuantely we have a Mid-Engine so no concerns with radiator, etc.).
46,000 towing miles on the 99, used a car cover in Alaska, nothing any other time. Some small stone marks in the paint. About 18,000 towing miles on the 98, some small chips there too. We had a brush skirt on the old MH and a full flap on this one.
We don't use anything for protection and have towed the PT for almost 6 years and 30,000 miles. The car still looks great but after a day behind the MH it is very dirty. I also am afraid to turn on the wipers sometimes. A quick quart of water on the windshield and I turn on the wipers. We do find a lot of carwashes.
Our toad is somewhat beaten up, which is why we keep it. We had to replace the side mirror. A tag came off another auto and hit the hood, a few other dings here and there. It does get dirty, too!

No Hurry-No Worry wrote: I love this forum! You guys (and gals) are so helpful. Thanks for all the input on the 4x4 flat tow able question we posted. Now another question comes up. We have made our long list of possible's. We are test driving all makes and models to narrow to a short list. Then we will look for the cream puff in the make and model we choose. We will be full timing in early Sept. We are in a '01 Executive DP. We have not towed a car for any extended length of time. We plan to get a screen/guard to protect the toad as much as possible. How bad will it still get dirty, dinged and chipped given normal good weather driving conditions? How much damage should we expect after a year or two? We will have a breaking system and a TPMS. Thanks all.

I will second the opinion that the height of the toad is a factor in whether you will get much damage.
I just towed my Jeep Wrangler across the country behind my Jayco class C. No mods to the motorhome or Jeep to avoid damage. I had zero dings when I completed my trip. It was dirty as all get out though - hit heavy rain in Eastern Washington, Indiana and Ohio.
