AJMorro,
Ditto to all of the above. You can pick up the insurance at any border town BEFORE you reach the border. Also make sure your A/C is tip top shape as you , the kids & dog will surely need it.

June is a great time to go. The water will be warm, it is so salty you can't sink. It's fun to try though. A/C will be needed and a shade cover for the kids on the beach. Take some sacks to fill with sand to hold it down.

You will need Mexican insurance as indicated above, regardless of your American insurance. Liability is required, anything above liability is your choice. Everyone has their favorite place to buy insurance, I buy mine right at the border fence on the US side. You pay for insurance from a specific time in 24 hour increments so I want to get it just before I cross.

Playa Bonita and the Reef are on Sandy Beach, probably 2 miles apart. Both are good. I didn't go downtown the last trip so I don't know the status of Play Elagante or Playa Oro, lots of folks preferred those camps.
Playa Elegante has been closed for a year or more.

Noticed someone recommended Playa Elegante. It's closed, just an empty lot waiting for the condo market to come back.

If you're going to PP you might want to know that the parks along the beaches west of town (Reef, Playa Bonita) are really popular with ATVers. The Playa de Oro has them too, but not as many.

Of course, the parks west of town are closer to JJ's Cantina.

The little white spot in the near center of this picture is the Reef RV park, taken from the west on top of black mountain (condo high rises are closer today). I like the Reef as it's out of town, great location for quad riding which we do, and almost every site has a view of the water. If you prefer to walk around to some shops etc, other parks would be better suited such as Playa Bonita. Quad riding in/out of the Reef is speed controlled, so don't worry about someone flying thru the site creating noise and dust issues. It's also close to Cholla Bay & JJ's Cantina, one of our favorite "hole in the wall" stops for some Mexican food and a margurita.

aj I'm confident you'll enjoy Playa Bonita. It's nice, as is the Reef. here is some info: OnTheRoadIn

We stayed at Playa Bonita last October. If you get a beachfront site, great. Even if you don't it is just a few seconds' walk. The office people are very friendly and helpful. There is a gameroom with Wifi and you can access the wifi from some of the closer sites. there will be vendors walking along the beach. We felt they were "ok" to purchase from. We negotiated prices and felt we bought some nice items for good prices. The shrimp men comes around each morning. We bought from the man in the van, not the man walking around with a bucket. We felt the van-man's shrimp were fresher. and they all are huge. I'm not sure of the "shrimp season" but you should find some good buys.

There are good directions on the web, and the signs in Puerto Penasco will direct you to Playa Bonita very well.

Have a great time.

Don't be concerned if they don't promptly respond. There will be lots of spaces then. I have never made reservations and have not been turned away in the last 20+ years.
