Teklanika campground at Denali is closed due to 2-3 feet of ice. Not clear when it will open if at all, depends upon the damage.

How long will it take to fill it up this time?

We have been moved to Riley Creek for the second week of June, tried to move the reservation to July, were told it probably would make no difference. They are going to let it melt, trying to break it up would cause more damage. Some doubt that it will open at all.

I wonder when they had such a melt that the water flowed and then froze where it is? That is a lot of ice to move.

What probably happened is that a near by creek froze from the surface to the bottom in some place and the water running under the ice, up stream over flowed into the campground. Most of the time this is caused by very cold temperatures instead of melting. This is what happens with lakes, streams, etc. where the shore ice freezes to the land and additional water is added underneath from springs, etc. the ice, so it forces its way on to the surface. If there is deep snow on the ice, then the water will just saturate the snow and cause overflow. Nasty stuff for flying on skis, running a snow machine or dog teams. Difficult to see if it exits at times. It can get deep enough to cover a snow machine or a person before it finally freezes solid. Good way to get wet in super cold temperatures. Most of my knowledge with overflow is first hand, LOL With the Fairbanks/Nenana day time temperatures in the mid 60°F range it won't take as long to melt as a person might think.

I have seen some of the flowing ice but not to the extent shown here. That is a pretty massive flow especially since it migrated into the out house. That will take some time to disperse.

In a normal hot Interior summer, you should be OK by mid July. Especially if the NPS will put some "dust" of some sort, wood ashes, fertilizer, etc., on the ice to speed up heat absorption to melt the ice. Fly ash from the Healy power plant would work fine but don't know if the park service would use it or not. One year, early 70s, the Air Force was dropping fly ash on the Yukon River, below the Galena Air Base to try and get the river to soften and melt faster to prevent flooding that spring. They had a crop duster airplane brought in and imported fly ash from somewhere. Of course the military just might not be as concerned with environmental issues as the park service. LOL

I have July 4 reservations. I not a letter saying if TEK was not avaible they would put me in Riley. The letter said that the ice would not melt until late June or LATER.
Please give me enough troubles, uncertainty, problems, obstacles and STRESS so that I do not become arrogant, proud, and smug in my own abilities, and enough blessings and good times that I realize that someone else is in charge of my life.
