Making our first trip to Charleston, SC and noticed 2 KOA's. Which should we stay at? I see that I can make reservations at the MP KOA by the internet but can not at the Charleston KOA. Just wondering is one nicer or better than the other. Also, coming from Eastern NC would it be easier to take I95 or Hwy 17 to Charleston? Thanks and any other info anyone can give would be VERY beneficial.

Most folks stay at James Island County Park which is on James Island just outside the historic district. It is a first class CG with full hookups. Don't have any info on the KOA's

Seeing as we live in Charleston, I can recommend the Mt Pleasant KOA over the other. Mt Pleasant is newer and is more family oriented, closer to beaches and shopping. JICP (James Island) is usually booked up in warm weather it is nice park and has a decent water park, trails and crabbing dock there. 17 will be very congested as you get closer to No. Myrtle Beach and remains that way down past Pawleys Island. Best to go 95 to 26 to 526E then 17N. Campground is just outside of Mt Pleasant.

You mention that you are traveling from Eastern NC...where abouts? We live in Wilmington, and I'd take 17 south to Charleston. Yes, it will be congested near Myrtle Beach, but you can avoid some of that depending on what time you travel that area.

The reason that I wouldn't go out to I-95 and then back down that way, is the amount of fuel I'd burn. If you go through Myrtle Beach (and take the bypass) early in the morning, you shouldn't have much problem, and you'll save quite a bit of money....

But, if you're closer to I-95 than I am, you may want to go that route.

Can't tell you anything about the campgrounds...sorry. I'm following this thread, as we want to make a trip down there one of these days too!! You didn't mention what you were looking for either...do you have kids, pets, or are you looking for quiet? Most of the KOAs seem to be family oriented, so may be more than you are interested in if there are just two of you. Just a thought.

Have a great trip!

I strongly agree with some earlier replies. Call James Island County Campground and try to get in there.
We've also stayed at the Charleston KOA. It is OK, clean, older park, nice people, lots of permanent sites. BUT nowhere near as nice as James Island.

In order of preference:

James Island
Mt. Pleasant KOA
Oak Plantation

I have stayed at all three in the last two years.

Forget the KOAs. James Island County Park is far and away the best place to stay. Very convenient too.

We have family in Mt Pleasant area, so KOA Mt Pleasant some 6-7 times. It works well, very friendly staff, works with us if we make reservations late. Has lots of amenities. Swimming pool stays open all winter with a greenhouse cover over it.

James Island is really nice, the tropical vegetation is right up against the site that we had, and the wife was worried about bugs. Otherwise James Island is great.
