Folks, he's traveling July 5th, not the 4th. Traffic will be light here on Saturday...staying on 95 is a great idea. It's what I'd do and I've lived here since 1976.
The worse traffic day that week will be the afternoon rush of the 3rd. The 4th itself will only be bad downtown.

Thank you DarkRubiTJ for the suggestion to travel the Eastern Shore. I have gone that route previously when going to Virginia Beach but hadn't really thought about it for Myrtle Beach.
Thanks too JasonD for your comments. Now I don't feel so foolish having asked the question in the first place. You understood exactly what I was asking regarding traffic on the 5th of July. I wasn't planning on driving in downtown D.C. just around the beltway.
