So I bought a small used inverter for our old TT. It's a 600W continous and 1000 watt peak inverter I wired it up. and we hooked up a very small coffee pot ( 600W ) and it blew both fuses?

My question is what size wire should I be running from the battery to the inverter?

1000 watt peak @ 12v = 83 amps. Use a wire big enough to carry 83 amps. Charts all over the internet. I don't own a Vintage Travel Trailer but I know this to be true.

It was likely the fact that you hooked it up to a coffee pot that caused it to blow....a small coffee pot draws more than a thousand watts. a 600 watt inverter is for such low draw items as lights, TVs, DVD recorders....and laptops if it clean enough for laptops. The rule is to connect it as close as possible to the battery with heavy wire....I would look at the installation instructions to be sure but I would think it is calling for around 8 ga. 0r 6ga. wire. It's permissable to run a longer 120v. extension cord from the inverter, but the 12v. cables providing power to the inverter must be short. Also, be sure to place a fuse (again, check for instructions)in the positive line. It will call for something like a 120 amp fuse....you can get them at a good automotive store...

Tripplite inverter wire chart.

I would size it for 100 amps so probably #2 wire.
