I have a 2006 Ford V-10 and was wondering how often I should change the oil. I am running a Fram Ultraguard oil filter with Motorcraft Synthetic blend motor oil. I start the engine weekly and drive the MH every other week. I do tow a TOAD on occasion when I go on trips once a month (about 45 miles each way).

Don't just start the engine without driving. Your fortnightly drive should continue at least a half hour after the engine is warmed by easy driving.

Change the oil according to your owner's manual. If there is a severe service recommendation, follow that. There is no point changing the oil sooner.

Any top brand of oil that meets the specs is fine. It doesn't have to be Motorcraft brand, nor does it have to be synthetic blend. Fram filters aren't my favorite. Their cheap ones are really junky, and their expensive ones are too expensive for what they offer...you can do as well with a Wix or NAPA/Gold, or Baldwin/Hastings, or Purolator.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

On my V-10 MH I had. I changed oil and filter every 4K miles. Not that it needed it. Just gave me a warm and cozy feeling. Also nothing wrong in going with the manual. Especially with the cost of Oil now days.

I always say what the owners manual states is the max miles, also watch the winter storage, drain and refill before -acids won't build up and cause damage. You will really be suprised after a search on Google for oil filter test!Napa Gold and Silver are really good choices, you will find many brands are made by the same company and the only difference is the advertising and marketing. My favorite oil is Klotz synthetic (smells almost like a motor guys perfume) I run Royal Purple in my hotrod truck. Some of my nephews drag race buddies say there has been a change in the last few years in the oil additives and its best to use diesel rated oil in any of the older engines-454/460-I have not researched this myself,I will say the guys that told me this live in a "world" of engine building and performance as a hobby and commercial trucking as a business.

The once a month trip is enought because those weekly starts can do a lot of damage I think especially to your oil.

Somewhere on this forum was a posting several months, heck could have been more than a year ago, by a oil chemical engineer that debunked some of these "myths".

The poster simply stated that changing your oil every XXX number of months whether or not it has been used is a waste of money. The person stated that oil "only" breaks down by usage - not sitting around. He noted that driving for a while and then parking the unit for months does not cause the breakdown - one should go according to the miles driven.

I wish I could find the posting that this person left - it was very detailed and explained things logically.

Me - I change my oil and all filters at the same time. That is once every 15,000 miles. Mine takes 23 quarts and the oil drained sure looks good to me.

My manual advises the 15,000 miles - and I stick to that regardless of the length of time involved.

Good Luck

God Bless

PS.

On another interesting note ---- I recently purchased a new Malibu. The computer advises the length of service left in the oil and I watched it gradually count down the % from 100 to 9 % this week. Took from January 11th till now to get there. Reading the manual and that's what they designed it for.

My mileage was 11300 when it was changed - and the manual also "specifically" states only - 5 W 30 oil and "not" to use different grade.

Guess I will go according to what they say. That may equal only 20 oil changes during the lifetime (that I will own) the car.

Wonderful car though - would not hesitate to buy another one. I am running between 34 and 37 mpg now - 90 % road miles.

God Bless

Bill

"The person stated that oil "only" breaks down by usage - not sitting around."

Moisture present in oil causes it to deteriorate, called hydrolyze. This happens very slowly, and is rarely a concern. It is one very good reason to run the rig long enough and hard enough to get the oil thoroughly warmed before parking the rig for any lenth of time. I use two years as the time limit on oil in an engine that is rarely run.

I change mine every 6 months -- usually. I never go over the mileage (3000 - 5000 miles between changes), but I guess I am sensitive to the age of the oil. I also pull a toad from time to time. If one leaves the oil in the rig too long, it can break-down and become less effective. I am sure there is a difference in long-term viscocity between synthetic, blend, and standard oil, but I don't care to do the calculus.
