can you tow an old chevy with a powerglide in neutral? reason i ask, i remember as a kid, if one of our chevies would not start, we would tow it behind another car and it would start, like manuals do when you pop the clutch, but you had to go quite a bit faster with the powerglide. this makes me think that if you towed it, the tranny might turn enough to keep things lubricated.
any logic to my thinking, or is it terribly flawed? lol

In mid 1963 I beleive it was they quit putting a rear pump in the aluminum powerglide. All of the old cat iron PG had rear punps.

Powerglide transmissions have NEVER had a rear pump. My first Chevy with a Powerglide was a 1952, then a 1957...neither had a rear pump.

Here's a link to an article in Hemmings Motor news:

According to the author all GM powerglide transmissions through the 1968 model year had a rear pump.

You may be right about 1968 I don't remember exact year but before retirement I was a mech. for 40 years and had a trans shop for 8 years. I also drag raced and built many powerglides for racers. Its the most popular trans for sportsman racing. Very seldom did I see a powerglide with a rear pump. When you did you had to make a different block off plate for the gov, area. They also had a powerglide in 1962 chevy2 4 cyl. that did not shift to low unless you manually shifted it.(very rare)
