The last piece of electronics I need to buy before hitting the road is a GPS device.
I will be traveling solo so I wanted to buy a GPS that I could upload or others would have access to a website for tacking purposes, as I am going to do some serious off road adventures and I'd like them to find me before rigamortus sets in if something goes wrong.
I've decided not to invest in the Data Storm as originally planned.
I just spent the last 2 days looking at 'all' what is available and all that did was confuse me more, and the kid/clerks in these stores just don't get the RV'ing part of it.
So I turn to all of you experts here to help me buy the right one and bypass having to buy several before I find the best one.
What's the newest and best GPS device out there that I should get?
1. Do I still need to purchase MS trips and streets?
2. One that I can somehow upload on the Internet for tracking.
3. KISS theory would be nice but not a must.
Thanks

GPS is a receive-only system. The only way you'll get your location transmitted back to a satellite is with a Datastorm unit.

We use both a Garmin 650 and streets and trips, the 650 in motion and streets and trips more as a routing tool, however we arent interested in a "tracking" feature. We also find that having a road atlas also is helpful on the occasions that the GPS gets confused,,. When I was making my decision I found a GPS forum that answered all of my questions.
I have since deleted that bookmark, but if you do a little searching I am sure you can find it. Try GPSreviewforums to start your search. I do know there is a satellite transmitter that can be mounted to an RV that can be linked to the internet but not sure if it can be used in a portable application.

We've had two GPS units. TomTom Go 300, screen too small & couldn't see from both front seats. Now we have built-in Navigation with larger screen & more features.
None that I've heard help with low overhangs or Truck/RV friendly fuel pumps. But I prefer to start route with MS S&T to learn basic route. We also follow road signs & use "The Next Exit". There's no one size fits all. It still sometimes takes a sense of direction & an old fashion Atlas.

I'm just a rookie at GPS and have been doing a lot of research. So far, it seems that Garmin has the best routing directions overall. I'm looking at the Nuvi 260 since it is a basic unit but has speech to text ability (i.e. it speaks the name of the street that you are to turn on). I suggest you look at the Nuvi line...go with one of the higher widescreen models.
That being said, I have read and found a web site for a gps designed for truckers. Do a search and you may find it.

Go the the link below and post the same question. It is the POI factory. It also permits you to download locations featuring some of the places you may want to visit. There are a lot of knowledgeable folks there who will also be able to provide you with ongoing help.

That's what I thought.
Some of those clerks at the stores were trying to tell me it would work with the portable units.
I'm probably going to buy a new coach a few months down the line and I didn't know the feasibility of mounting the DataStorm and then taking it off for the new MH and if it leaves holes that a buyer of my coach wouldn't like.

The nuvi 7xx has a track feature that you can upload to the computer and see where you've been. Perhaps someone can give more detail since I don't normally use this feature.
Datastorm is great but have you considered cell phone access? I have a friend with the Wilson dual amp, outside antenna and inside panel antenna for about $400. With this setup he is good for 50 miles from the cell tower. The inside antenna has a range of 25' for both cell phone and computer usage. Works outside the rig also. He uses Verizon and the speed is good.

This is the type that will track your movements and send to internet, but I don' think it is very usable as a regular GPS - mainly made for theft prevention.
