I'm going to need to change my air filter soon and I can't find anybody that sells aftermarket except K&N. Of course this isn't a straight replacement, you have to put in a new snorkel to accomodate the filter. From the instructions, it looks like an involved procedure and I was wondering if anybody here as done it. Secondarily, does anybody know of an aftermarket source for a direct replacement filter?

I bought my first replacement filter from a GM dealer in SD for $45. Just ordered another one off EBay.
It is WIX # 46907.

Thanks for that part number. I'll wander down to my local NAPA and see if they have it.

According to several posts I have read at diesel place the K&N does not improve performance on the 5500 with Duramax.

JohnInAz, I cut and pasted the following from a post I made back in January:

I was looking for a K&N air filter for the big gasser in my Kodiak but couldn't find any. However I did find what appears to be an identical oiled cotton filter made by AFE (Advanced Flow Engineering). The specs looked good so I ordered one. This thing is very high quality and actually looks like it came off of the K&N assembly line. I installed the AFE filter and immediately noted an improvement in acceleration. Sorry I don't have any more before/after specific performance data on this. I've used K&N filters for years so the first thing I always do with any new vehicle is install one. So after my initial search, I was happy to locate the AFE filter. Cost was a little over $95 on-line with free UPS shipping.
