It depends. My old Garmin eTrex Legend was marginal at best on the dash. My new Garmin 60CSx doesn't mind any sort of overhead cover. I can even pick up a signal while indoors.
For my road trip last summer, I bought the DeLorme map & GPS pack. I stuck the GPS under the plastic emergency escape hatch. A couple USB extensions and I was able to hook it to the laptop in the cab. I brought the wire in through the extended cab wing window. Only issue... Don't forgot to disconnect this wire when removing the camper.

They also would inside my house -- which was a nice surprise. (now I can find my way around the house)
I though I was the only one with difficulty finding my way around the house. I use Streets Atlas and Topo USA. I prefer the Topo, so I know when I am going up (or down) the stairs. We must be getting old.
I have a Tom Tom on a PDA (HP5915). It has the new chip set and works fine with it mounted on the dash. I note that starting out pointing East down a tree lined road, it won't find a signal until I clear the trees a couple of miles down the road. If I connect it to my external antenna (that mounts on the front of the hood), it connects right away). (i.e. it will work without external antenna, but it works better with one).
My Garmin Nuvi 350 (w/SiRF high sensitivity rcvr) works fine on the dash w/o an external antenna. I bought an external antenna, but have never used it.

my tom tom works great also. it sit on a bracket that is attatched to the cup holder(1996 Dodge).so it even sits inside the truck more than if on top of the dash.
