My Lance camper extends about a foot and a half beyond the windshieldof my truck. Will this cause a problem with GPS reception? I have a Garmin unit which has a connection for an external antenna and I'm wondering if I need to invest in one. My hesitation in making the purchase is I've read that the MCX connector on it is flimsy and breaks easily.

I use the Garmin c-550 Street Pilot. With the newer receivers currently in use, my unit locks onto the sats like a bulldog on a meat truck. Not so with my older 2610 model Street Pilot. I've found no need for an external antenna for the c-550.

My Garmin Nuvi appears to work fine as well. I think the new GPS units (at least the road travel specific ones) use a bit more software smarts than the old units. Since they are for road travel they don't necessarily need to freak out if they lose some signals. They know what road you're on and what you're speed is (or was) so they can do some guess-timating until signal is restored.

At least that's my theory...

DeLorme LT-20 and LT-40 both work great just thrown up on the dashboard.

Me too, except I put mine under the dash carpet pad.

Have a Garmin 7200 Street Pilot with an external antena. Never loose reception except in tunnels. I have the cord routed under the dash and just lay the thing neare where the defrost vents are. Works great.
Good luck.

They also would inside my house -- which was a nice surprise. (now I can find my way around the house)
