I downloaded SP1 for Mac Office 2008 today...in true MS fashion it won't work. It required me to register Office (again) before it would install. In order to register you need the product ID...to get the product ID you need to get into Office -- the installer even tells you where to look in the menus (Word>About Word), but you can't get into Office until you register it! Only MS is capable of such foolishness.
I was able to use Time Machine to go back and re-install Office so it works fine now.
So if you want to install SP1, write down your product ID BEFORE you install it. Me, I'm staying with iWork.

First off, thanks a bunch for the warning. I was about to install it myself.
I am curious though - can't you get the product ID off of the CD sleeve?

I believe the number on the box is the license...the product ID is different (I think -- I don't have the box handy).
The directions on the MS site say to goto Word (or Excel, whatever)>About Word to get the ID...they don't say use the license number on the box.
Neither of my computers would download the update using the autoupdate feature -- I had to download SP1 manually. I'll try again when it autoupdates.

I had nothing but problems getting Office 2008 to run on my duo core iMac. I finally got through all the hassles of installation and found that excel crashing all the time. I had to back up every few minutes so I went back to 2004 which was still on my computer. Finally a few weeks ago there was another update and since then no more issues. Not a great lot of difference between them, or not for what I am doing. Others claimed it faster but again I see only a slightly faster load time.

iWork wasn't bad, but the new OpenOffice 3 (currently in beta) is pretty darn sweet.

OK...I've been weaning myself off of MSOffice for a while now. Open Office and NeoOffice are very good and do what I need. Plus they work on Windows, Linux & Mac and have built-in pdf file export ability. Our school PC's are loaded with MS Office, but when I show the students looking for their personal computers the Open Source alternatives, most opt for them and save their $$$.
While I have been waiting to see how MSOffice 2008 for the Mac was going to pan out, I ordered the Family Pack of iWork (for $75 dollars, which includes a 5-install license) and it looks like it'll be great for what the rest of the family will need.
Unless MSOffice 2008 really offers something the others don't, I don't think I'll be buying any more MS Office products. Plus, the cost of putting it on 4 computers is more than I would want to pay. Too bad MS can't adopt the "family pricing plan" that Apple uses for much of it's software and Operating Systems.

I too have not seen any real speed improvements with 2008 - which there should be since it is native Intel code. Typical Microsoft bloat I guess.
Both Word and Excel seem to actually take longer on some things - but I really like the new Entourage.

I only have MS Office on my computer in case someone sends me an Office file I need to open. iWork or OpenOffice just don't open MS Office files as good as I would like them to. I do all of my word processing or spreadsheets in iWork. More importantly, my kids use iWork for school as they find it much easier to use.
I like the look of the new Office, but I am disappointed in the performance of it. 2008 is a universal application, so one would expect it to be much faster than 2004 (that relied on Rosetta to run on an Intel Mac). My experience is that 2008 is just as slow -- if not slower -- than 2004 was. iWork is blazenly fast.
Back on topic -- has anyone successfully installed SP1?
