My neighbor up the street has successfully updated to SP1. He said that he had to enter the product key from the back of the DVD sleeve. I didn't ask if he got the update, but knowing him, he did it manually.
Known issues causing problems with the update include:
Office Installer installs Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac in the Applications folder. If you move the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to another location on your computer, or if you rename or modify any of the files in the Microsoft Office 2008 folder, you cannot install product updates. To correct this issue so that you can install product updates, drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash, and then reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk.

Some users who have installed Office 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1 are reporting an issue that occurs after installation. This situation occurs when the Office Setup Assistant detects that an invalid Product Key was used to install Office 2008.
To resolve this issue, please move the following files to the Trash:
After you complete these steps, open any Office application, and then use the product key that is included with your original installation disk to complete the installation.

I got AutoUpdate to install it, it's finishing up right now. Funny how all of the MS Updates are found my AutoUpdate, but they have to ask you to manually quit AutoUpdate. Good job MS, keep up the good work!!
More details to follow.

Well, everything is up and running. No problems and didn't have to put in any keys! JasonD, thanks for the warnings - I was prepared for the worst. Just got lucky this time.
Well, this may not be related to the SP1 update but I've got to vent.
I'm working on an important paper. Been editing and adding since 11AM today. I have manually saved my changes several times and watched Autosave do it's thing too. Got ready to take a break a 3pm and I get an error message: "Harddrive too full to save, please use an alternate location or quit some programs." So I quit some programs and check my HD, 30GB free!! So I try to save again, same thing. I try Save As, same thing. So I think, hey I'm ok I've been saving all day let me just copy this last paragraph I wrote and I'll restart Word. Copied it and reopened Word and the document, and - got the same one I started with at 11AM!!!!! Gee, words cannot describe (well not words I can post here anyway...)
Just out of curiosity....are you running Time Machine? If so, you should have hourly back-ups of your work. That's one of the real neat features of TM is that you can go back and review or recover your document as it looked even after several revisions have been made.

Nope, maybe I should start! I've got 10.5 and have been deciding between Super Duper and Time Machine for external backups. Maybe I should just go with TM and get both features!
Time Machine is great...I used it here to re-install a working copy of Office after the update went bad. One time, SOMEONE (not me, really) erased Excel. Don't ask me how, but it was GONE. I simply went into TM, go back a few days and find Excel sitting there in the Office 2008 folder, click on Restore and it's back. Took about 15 seconds. So simple!
