we have the truck and trailer in our signature, coming home from Arizona we averaged 10mpg. If its windy, it drops to 8.8mpg. We have gotten 11-12 on very flat terrain and perfect weather conditions. We came home on April 2, the newest visa bill says we charged 1200.00 in diesel.Of course the diesel was cheaper a month ago..LOL..Dona

mine is a 2003 7.3PSD CC SRW with 3.73rearend auto..
I have the last two trips averaged driving 62MPH with one trip getting around 11.78mpg, the last one this past weekend I got 10.11MPG.
Second trip I drove mostly highway speeds of 62 MPH,
the first trip I drove some highway speeds @ 62mph and some rural speeds down to as low as 40mph.. that might be the difference in mpg..
BUT it basically only 1mpg better..
So if you have what I have truck wise, hope you get 12mpg, probably will get 10 mpg, budget for $5 plus dollars a gallon.. Diesel is $4.499gal around here today with gas hitting $3.799gal also..
I was looking back at my fuel logs and I was paying 3.199 first part of the year and I thought it was high then...

Just pulled the RV 1550 miles, budgeted for 10MPG @ $6.00 a gallon. Got 9.8 and never paid higher then $4.40 a gallon. Putting money back in my pocket.

Diesel prices are really jumpy lately. I tanked up last Saturday at $4.15. Sunday it was up to $4.30 and driving to work today I saw it everywhere at $4.45. That is just plain crazy.

But it is what it is so plan to take it slow and enjoy the trip part of the trip. Otherwise you might as well switch to a car and motels.

Happy camping!!! See ya'll down the road!!!

Best Info at present!
I tow a 31' FW, when I get 10mpg. I've hit the big time. After 200 miles I'm looking for fuel stop anyway. Between 50 / 75 its a potty stop for someone!

If you access Mapquest. You can plan and / or set up a travel route. For the type of traveling you want or wish to do.

Several have said to by pass So. Cal. Well that will be up to you. When you decide on a route. But! I live at the southern part. T.J., Mx. is 15 miles away.
There is several way to get around the downtown L.A. Area.
That's depending on where you enter So. Cal. from.
Most of the time I go through L.A. before or after the business day, mostly after. I will pull the grapevine at night when its cool. Yes! There are a lot of trucks at that time to! But! Fewer cars to deal with. I have used the I-15, I-215, I-10, and I-210 all of which pass you around the L.A. downtown area to the east, and will put you on the I-5 north of San Fernando, and just before start of the Grapevine climb route. After that you can choose SR-99 or I-5, I like 99. Both have and are truck routes. Unless fixed the right lane sucks.

I usually averaged 12.3 mpg but this year on the way to ruidoso,nm i laft home with a side wind. When we left lubbock,tx it was a head wind and climbimg up the mountain to ruidoso i had a stiff 40 mph headwind. My average for the whole trip was 8.8 mpg.Last time i fueled up which was a couple weeks ago diesel was 4.19.9 but today it is 4.39.9 .I expect it to get higher before it goes down but just enjoy your trip.

Gas mileage will be real bad!
Diesel mileage about 8-10 mpg overall.
Bring lots of cash and credit cards.

Best advice I've seen. We do the same with any trip. Never know what you will run into. We departed on one trip expecting a nice smooth trip and I figured gas stops based on my 'normal' 10mpg. We hit a 40+mph headwind halfway through the day! Mileage went to 6mpg! I was glad that I knew the route well, so modified my 'stop plan' on the fly.
