I'm sure you can but our experience has been that the Mexican health system is cheap, excellent and easily accessible so we just pay as we go.

Yes you can. We are covered under our gold card for the first 31 days after leaving our province (not from when you leave Canada!) after that we arrange ahead of time 'top up' insurance from RBC insurance. You can go into a Royal Bank & get an app, or do it online or over the phone.
It may be a bit of an overkill as BC medical will cover any expenses up to the same level as in Canada. This works when visiting Mexico, not the US though.
Finally you could do as Bob suggests and just pay it, you have to be careful however as some of the hospitals are run by US companies.

Edwardo, even if you travel within Canada, to another province or territory, you might be advised to buy some extra health insurance. Costs pertaining to a physician, etc., are covered by B.C. Medical up to the cost you would incur in B.C. but that leaves out a fair amount of services you might also need.
In Mexico, if you end up in an expensive hospital, the bill could often exceed what B.C. Medical will pay; they may wait for up-front cash before starting any treatment, that could be a pain...
If you are driving to Mexico you are also driving in the USA where hospitals are truly Big Business. You will want to have that covered, Canada will never do that completely. Lately we have used Manulife but there are several Travel Insurance sources.

We buy out of province top up coverage from the Co-operators here in Ontario. As mentioned above the biggest risk from a cost perspective is having a health problem when transiting the US on the way to Mexico, as the provincial plans don't come close to covering US health care costs.

If you want out of country insurance (excluding US), it will be very reasonable in terms of cost, Co-operators offers such a plan.

Our experience with out of province coverage within Canada (one doctor visit and one ER visit) was that doctors rates were the same (BC and Newfoundland vs. Ontario), there were no additional payment requirements. I would take the risk within Canada, any payment requirements would be minimal.

Keep in mind that this is emergency health insurance. It does not cover any day to day problems. It can be cheap depending on your age and health history. If you have had serious health problems some insurers will not sell you policies for more than 30 or 60 days. Stick with any of the major plans and you will be fine. ( CARP, RBC, CAA)

I think what Moisheh meant to say it that the insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions, it does cover day-to day emergencies. Pre-existing conditions can be covered at a cost.

By the way, the number of companies providing the insurance is fairly limited, RBC for example provides coverage for a number of other providers, you are actually being insured and serviced via RBC (even though when you call in, they answer using the name of your "insurer").

Another important fact for us those that enjoy an occasional Margarita down there, if you injure yourself and the hospital does a blood test and finds you are impaired then your coverage could be voided.

As usual, it's wise to read the fine print.

rocmoc: You are stuck with seeing an IMSS veterinarian !! Actually you can buy short term travel insurance just like us Canucks. Try AAA or do a google. Lots of options. But you will not be covered while driving that race car in the desert!!!
