There is a campground at one end of the dragon. It is small and really designed for motorcyclist. There is also a nice bed and breakfast about half mile down the road for the campground. Enjoy the ride.

Have not been there but it has been recommended. Let me know how you enjoyed the ride when you get back.

I've been across it on a motorcycle but haven't camped there. Went across from TN to NC on Dragon's Tail and back across Cherahola (sp?) Skyway. Beautiful area.
Not sure of your intention, but I would not suggest pulling a trailer through Dragon's Tail, unless it is really short and narrow, but the Skyway wouldn't be bad if you have enough torque and braking.

There are nice campgrounds at Townsend, just a half hour ride from yhe dragon, have stayed at the Big Medows, & the KOA, both very nice. I ride the dragon every year, & the best days are monday to thursday, any other days it is very crowded. From townsend I can ride through the dragon, turn around & ride back through to townsend in an hour & a half.

I've tent camped a few times at Fontana Village campground and enjoyed it. Haven't been back with the RV, but would stay there if I were in the area.
It's about 10 miles down Hwy 28 from the Crossroads at the dragon. 28 is a great ride in itself, also don't miss the Cherohala skyway.
As was said above, do not haul the camper down the dragon.

Ironhorse is a nice CG but I wouldn't take an RV They have CabinsBunkhouses 4 beds to a room real nice tent camping, motorcyclecampers like Bunkhouse Aspen etc. Too tight to get a big rig in there. We stayed there with the bikes great folks own and run the place. Clean and they bend over backwards for the customer. You can also get breakfast and dinner there but you have to sign up for it. Don't know about RV CG's this is our 1st year with the 5r

I went to Punkin Center in April.

There is a KOA in Telico Plains. These would be preferable if coming from the west with an RV.
here's me riding at Deal's

We stayed at Ironhorse in Stecoah back in 2005. Really nice place, great folks that run it. Kind of on the small side for big rigs but definatly do-able.
