We're looking for a campground closer to the grandkids who live in Middle River MD area on the north east corner of Baltimore. We have tried Bar Harbor in Abingdon a few years ago but we weren't really impressed. This trip we are staying at Ft Meade (retired Military) but it is 45 minutes one way through Baltimore traffic.

In our last rig (34') we were able to just pull into their driveway but the 40 footer is just too much for the space.

We've checked the Trailer Life book and the campground reviews but haven't found anything. Is there any other place out there that would cut down the grandkid commute time? Water and 30 amp at a minimum. Sewer would be great but not a deal breaker.

I don't recall anything in the immediate area other than Bar Harbor.

I looked at RVParkfinder.com - saw Milldale in Reisterstown (might be less traffic congestion for you), in Riverside, there's a listing for Ponderosa Pines, in Earlyville, there's Buttonwood Beach, and in Perryville, Camp Airy.

As to State Parks, Gunpowder Falls is probably closest and allows camping. There's also Susquehanna St. Park.

You're kind of out of luck. As far as location goes, you've seen our best.

Fort Meade won't be a bad deal. I live about 10 minutes from Fort Meade and get to work in downtwon Balto using the BW Parkway (I -295). in about 25 minutes. Since you are going to Middle River you may end up paying the tunnel toll or the bridge toll whe you stay at Ft Meade.

You won't have to worry to much about Balto traffic, Fort Meade to Middle River will all be on Interstates on the east side of town. The only problem over on that side is the rush hours.

If it's listed in the Yellow Pages, the government shouldn't be messing around with it.

PattieAM - thanks for looking but didn't have any luck with your suggestions. Both Milldale and Camp Airy look to be daycamps only, Buttonwood Beach is across the bay although it is pretty close as the crow flys, and Riverside Maryland is even further south in Calvert County, more than 2 hours away.

As for the State Parks, Gunpowder Falls doesn't have RV sites as far as I could see on their website and Susquehanna only lists sites for RV's up to 32 feet.

I do appreciate your efforts but I didn't want others who read my post to think I was able to find something after reading your post.

Anybody else?

Haven't stayed here but here is a 2nd option, it's 20 to 25 minutes out from baltimore. It's a KOA campgrand and has big rig sites. Hope this helps.

Unless you want to be further away then Fort Meade, you are out of luck.

Everything that meets your criteria or is worth staying at is south or west of Balto.

Much further up 95 from Bar Harbor is Elk Neck State Park (water sewer and electric. All of the other state parks and federal parks in the area have electric only or nothing.

To the west out I-70 is Ramblin' Pines. Nice park but farther then Ft Meade.

Someone else posted the KOA in Millersville , but again south of Baltimore. It is off of I-97 which would take you up to 695 to Middle River. Six of one/half dozen of the other with Ft Meade, but probably twice the price.

I wouldn't write off Susquehanna without a phone call. They have some pretty big sites and may be able to accomodate you in a specific site that they personally know will fit your rig.

Don't forget Morris Meadows up 83 near the PA border. It's closer to Middle River than Ramblin' Pines. If you don't mind roughing it APG has primitive sites along the bush river. Bar Harbor is the closest full service campground.

Maryland, as you have found out, is a campground-poor state.

Morris Meadows is nice, but it's even further than Ft. Meade.
