I've had plugs in the bed sidewall on my last 3 trucks, hauled everything from lumber to top soil without problems.

Another vote for in-bed. Socket sits under bed rail behind drivers side wheel well.

I thought I would install a connection in the bed until I used mine over the tailgate for a few thousand miles ... I have observed that in my application, it's less likely to get tangled with my SuperGlide if it goes back over the tailgate. The only thing it rubs is the top of my tailgate, and it has a plastic cap on it. I has not left any evidence of abrasion.

My in bed plug is mounted just inside the tailgate flush with the bed. Does not get in the way of cargo and I can reach it (being short and fat) from the ground.

That being said, all of my trucks have the plug in the bed in the driver side corner post next to the tailgate. I recommend that location. . .

Interesting you should recommend that. I just had my hitch installed in a new truck and that is where they put the plug. It looks good, but I wonder if I will catch stuff on it when loading the truck when I am not towing. I thought they were usually closer to the front.

I got the y-connector from a local RV store and installed the 7-pin in the bed just in front of the tire well but behind the fuel door on the outside. Was an easy fix hardest part was drilling a hole in my brand new truck. Very easy to plug and unplug trailer and no worry if the plug is dragging on the ground. The Y is a direct fit for fords.

I have the plug in the bed inside the back pillar. Works great.

My bed is lineX sprayed, including over the top of the tailgate. I plug the 5er cable in to the connector at the center of the bumper. No issues with tangling, as I use a bungy to keep the cable in position as well. I have a superglide (4 years now) and there have never been any issues with it.
