i think you're supposed to fill your black rank 1/3 full and add tank treatment. but i'm a newbie too, leaving on first trip tomorrow.

We always add about a gallon of water to black, and gray, tanks after dumping. Keeps seals from drying out, and any "deposit" left in tank from turning to concrete. In winter we add some antifreeze.

We add about 1-2 gallons of water in both the black and gray tank. I also put in a little chemical and a drop in thing in the black tank after its been dumped. A friend of ours forgot once to put in water and chemical in their black tank and it smelled horrible the next time they used it.

i've been using RID-X for a number of years, breaks down waste, paper, and no odor. just a few oz to a tank. After i empty the black tank i put in a gallon or so of fresh water and some rid-x. you can get it at wally world. i use calgon as well to break up the minerals in the water, not sure if it really helps, but in close to seven years and two units, never a problem.

Add a couple gallons of water in each tank. Add a bit of Callgon. or Add a bit of dishwashing liquid. or Add a bit of laundry soap. or Add a bit of RV black tank chemicals. I've done it all. But ALWAYS add water.

i'll use my tornado if possible at the dump station, if not i'll do it at home and do the GEO thing w/o the bleach(hook up to my septic and want to keep the little critters in there alive and happy). always keep some water in there for the seals and any 'left overs' and a wand or tornado or something else to be able to rinse it out.

Do a search on here for "geo method" and you will learn just about all you need to know about taking care of your black and gray tanks.

Remember many 'black tank chemicals' can shut down a septic system.

4 years now, no chemicals, just the GEO method occasionally.
