If you travel in Canada, then get one with the full pass through capability. That is the lead from the off air antenna will pass through the converter to the television. Canada is not going digital until much later, 2011 I think.

I understand that the one from Radio Shack has a meter that allows you to zero in your antenna for best reception.

I think there all pretty much the same. Just get something local, don't spend much over $60 unless there are some awesome features you really want.

I'm waiting for one with a QAM tuner so I can use my other two old TVs on COMCAST cable. I have my two coupons -- only problem is they expire after 90 days!

No, No, No - They are not created equal! Find some reviews before you spend anything. I read some very crazy stuff on what the pictures end up looking like on your TV.

Why would you need one for Cable TV? They already do and will in the future decode it for you. I guess some people are still confused about what is going on with the DTV thing. And it has NOTHING to do with HDTV! Go to DTV2009.gov and learn what you need to know. By the way I sell 2 converter boxes a day at a national retailer. So I do know what is required.

Looked in 3 Wally's, a Circus City, and 2 Radio Shafts. All were "out of stock". Finally had some at the local Burst Buy. I think they will be in short supply later on -- grab them when you see them.

I just got two RCA boxes at Walmart ... for out of pocket $9 each.

I hooked one up to an old black and white TV we use when dry camping ... and after scanning for channels, bam ... there they were ... even the sub channels some stations are broadcasting.

I'm impressed.

And since the converter box needs ac power, we'll watch tv when the honda generator is running for a couple of hours to recharge the batteries ... and use an inverter to power the converter box (don't think it will pull much power).

Why do I have a black and white tv? It uses far less power than color.
