I have seen that some stations still sell DSL Diesel. Does anyone know which fuel will give a pre-2007 better MPG. I Have heard that using home heating oil gives 2mpg better econony. This is based on travel filling with heating oil and re-filling on the road with ULSD. The first leg on heating oil always 2 mpg better! Lets not discuss the legal issues of using heating oil but the topic of ULSD vs. DSL. Is DSL Diesel the same as heating oil? I am traveling next week and see from the major truck stops websites that DSL is still for sale.

DSL aka LSD

If you are buying diesel (wether they advertise it as DSL or ULSD) in the US then its probably ULSD since our wonderful government mandated its use in all states. A few stations carry dyed diesel that is intended for farm vehicles etc, the difference is it doesn't have fuel taxes added on. I suspect most of it is still ULSD. Heating oil will work just fine in pre 2007 model vehicles.

I don't understand the value to us of ULSD except maybe in heavily populated areas. It just drives up the cost.

I think you mean LSD, low sulfur diesel fuel, vs. ULSD ultra low sulfur diesel fuel.

The problem with finding LSD fuel is that the stations selling it would need two diesel fuel tanks and pumps, one for LSD and one for ULSD. Most only have one set of tanks and pumps, so that gets ULSD.

Whether or not home heating oil is the same as LSD depends on the distributor, what their supplier offers, and the tankage the distributor has. In some cases it is all the same, just the dye in the heating oil to indicate no road tax paid. In other cases it is a lower quality product.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

Low sulfur, not ULSD--if you can find it.

I was unable to determine any difference in mileage at all. The ULSD gives me exactly the same mileage per gallon as I was getting before.

Go figure

I filled up on LSD and my mileage jumped to 9.5 MPG @ 65MPH. That run included crawling over Mont Eagle in between CHA and BNA.

Most interesting.
