looking at the map looks like HiWay 2 is the only way to go via Newport to HiWay 2 over to Laclede to Riley Creek, Idaho.

What about HiWay 41? up to Laclede .. we are towing a 30 ft. travel trailer.

US 2 is a much better highway than SR 41, once you get a few miles north of Spokane, the traffic eases off and you will not have any problems. Newport WA and Priest River ID are nice small towns, you may want to stop and grab a bite at either place. If traveling at night, watch for deer.

We wondered about the ups and downs thru Post Falls then Rathdrum/Blanchard then onto Newport ..

We have been up to Newport via Spokane north .. never have gone the other way .. Post Falls/Rathdrum/Blanchard Newport was suggested by someone who hates city traffic. But were unsure whether HiWay 41 was a good road or not.

Thanx for the replies.

SR 41 in Idaho is a decent road, but is narrower and more hills than US 2 from Spokane. If taking a car, then SR 41 is a good shortcut from Rathdrum to Newport, but since you're traveling with a fairly long trailer, I wouldn't go that way myself. Have driven both routes many times several years ago when we lived in Newport. Only thing to watch is the traffic in Spokane, avoid the commute hours if you can.
