do you realize that you're just leasing the receiver from DirecTV? Yep, you pay $99 up front & then pay a $7/month lease fee. To get around that, you can buy (for real) a receiver from BestBuy, Costco or others for the same price of $99. When you get it home, just hook it up, go thru the setup to where you need it activated & call DirecTV customer service to activate it. If it's replacing a receiver you already have that you're leasing from them, they should de-activate that one & send you the packaging (pre-paid) to send it back to them. No fees

Whew! Where to begin! There is no $7.00 lease fee; it is for an additional receiver on the subscription. If you own the receiver, you still pay for additional receivers.
If you "buy" a receiver at Best Buy, Costco, etc., you are really only leasing it. There are some recievers available for purchase on the internet, but why bother? The only difference is that DTV may (or may not) want the receiver back (and send a prepaid container) when you cancel your sub.
Also, if the new HD receiver that the OP is discussing is a DVR (probably), they have to install additional coax.

Its not a DVR Fredzo just a HD reciever. I currently have 1 HD reciever and two standards which one of the standards is the one I want to switch out for a HD unit. I was under the impression that Directv changed something back in 96 that did not allow you to supply your own reciver and if you did they still charged you the lease fee even if you own it. SO it is my understanding that it does not pay or may not be possible to use your own reciever, am I off base on this.
ben212 wrote: No! I am not paying someone to hook up a reciever but Directv is expecting me to. I assumed they mailed it to you but they told me a service person delivers it. So I am going to call back talk to someone else and see where that goes because I have read the stories that depending on who you talk to the outcomes can vary.
You can order a HD receiver online. You don't have to call. And you're going to have to pay something for the receiver you've leased for only 2 months. When you accept receivers you're under contract to use them for a set period of time, same as a cellphone.

Well it looks like it is true regarding who you talk to varies on the answer you get to your questions with directv. I called DTV tonight and asked again about upgrading one of my standard recievers to a HD reciever and was told that it would cost $99 plus $19 shipping plus tax plus the $50 new customer fee. This time the service rep told me that I could get arround this by going to a Best-Buy or cosco and buy(which means lease) a reciever from them for $99 and when I activate that one cancel the other reciever and DTV will send a box to ship my standard one backFree of charge. Now I hope this guy is right as this seems reasonable So I will give it a try.
