Is there a law against buying truck fuel in Mexico for personal use and bringing it into the us?

Are you talking about filling the tanks of your vehicle in Mexico and driving back into the US? Or, are you talking about taking a tanker to Mexico to fill up and bring back? The former happens all of the time; the latter would get you into trouble.

I bring back 156 gallons every chance I get...it how much my truck tanks hold.

I go down and fill up the truck every three to four weeks with diesel. The last time I crossed, for the first time ever the USA Customs agent asked how much I purchased. I purchase 86 gals each time. The Customs agent told me there was a 200 gal limit. Because of the now high cost in the USA, they are starting to crack down. They have turned back people with tanks on trailers in excess of 200 gals. Just a beware note!

The agent at Lukeville told me 100 gallons is the max for a tank in the bed of the pickup.
There must be a reference for this. Surely they aren't picking numbers out of thin air??

It would be interesting to see a written reference but I wouldn't doubt that each crossing has a different number.

USA Customs agent in Nogales said the limit was 200 gals. Any surprise our government agents are any more in syn as the Mexico Officials? Any case my truck only holds 86 gals so am OK either way and I save over $160 a trip. In addition there is a bunch of Mexico brand foods we enjoy so we hit the market while we are across the border and also fill the ice chest!

Called U.S. Customs and Border Protection office at San Luis, Arizona (928)627-8854- spoke with agent/supervisor; asked if there were any regulations/restrictions on the amount of diesel fuel allowed with return or re-entry to U.S. He indicates there is a definite maximum of 100 gallons(this would include the amount in the primary tank(s) and any other fixed or portable containers.) Any person carrying an amount over the 100 gallon limit would be directed to the Commercial Entry port and would be required to comply with the Commercial Entry regulations. I did not inquire as to what those regs might be.

Michael interesting. I just talked to the supervisor at your number. He said it is totally at the discretion of the port of entry. It can be 200 gals down and for them, Yuma, they start taking a second look at anything above 119 gals. The fuel HAS to be for personal use. But he did say they can go lower if they feel someone is trying to resell. He also indicated they are getting concern as more people are crossing for fuel and it may become a problem even just filling your tanks for person use. Typical government/big business BS. Good luck! In the future, go shopping or more along with filling your tanks or it IS going to be a problem.

Hey rocmoc, try this number: (760)572-0089. This is the Port of Entry at Andrade, Calif. The recording is a bit lengthy, but does indicate to punch #210 to speak to Officer In Charge. The guy who answered said that the limit is at 120 gallons and must be for personal use. I asked if I could fill a 100 gallon container; he said that the container must be affixed or plumbed to that vehicle which you are driving; that you could not have portable containers. He says they just got the current information as of Sunday.
We'll be going over Wednesday for lunch and diesel and I'll make inquiry of what-ever Customs agent is working the driving lanes and see if I get yet another or different version. Michael
