 Some folks speak of the "bad times" we are having, gas prices, food shortages, housing slumps. Well this is from the American Life Histories: Manuscripts from the Federal Writers' Project, 1936-1940. It will make things seem better, at least put them in perspective! 
Very interesting reading from a man who went thru much worse than anything we will ever face! And survived the Great Depression. A lot of you most likely had Grand Parents that would tell you these stories also. My grandmother was raised in the great city of Chicago, in the era of the great Gangster Wars in the 20's, the Prohibition and survived the Depression years too! Made "Apple Pie" without apples! Soup kitchens. "Hey mister, can you spare a nickle?" Bug's Moran, Al Capone, etc. Piece of cake compared with the minor hickup we are going thru currently.
People are saying they are going to sell there RV's because they can't afford the fuel. In a year or two that's likely something they will regret.  Don't do anything you'll regret! Remember the "great gas shortages of 1973? Waiting in line at 5 am to get gasoline, going to get gas based on if your licence plate was "odd of even"! Fights in line, huge gas price spike. Deja-vu!
Don't fret so much, tighten your belts a bit and "enjoy" the ride...as they say, "if it don't kill you, it just makes you stronger!"

Just saw a news clip about up-scale homeless in Santa Barbara. Appears the city has made arrangements for people to sleep in their cars behind locked gates.

I think you are right! I got up at 5:30 to wait in that gas line in the 70's. My parents lived through the Depression, oddly enough, in Chicago.
And here we are. Everything changes...and perspective is everything!

I for one aint sellin' my RV. I aint gonna sit around and moan and groan 'bout the "bad times". I aint gonna live beyond my means.
What I am gonna do is enjoy life the very best I can while I can. I am gonna make the best of whatever the situation is and rejoice that I can still work and enjoy what I have been blessed with. I am gonna try to encourage others when life seems to get them down. And I am gonna do it all with a smile and a good word every chance I get.
And I believe that if I do this then maybe somebody will have had a better day for it.

I'm a big student of history, and I can say without reservation - the gloom-and-doom, sensationalistic mass media and Chicken Little types aside - that we are living in the safest, healthiest, and wealthiest time in the history of mankind. And it's not even close.
The level of comfort, luxury, security, and free time enjoyed by the average citizens of any of the more advanced countries of the world today would have been unheard of by anyone but the most wealthy as recently as a hundred years ago. Even our so-called poor live very well compared to most of human history, where the majority of one's existence was spent in a day-to-day struggle just to survive.
I regularly remark that our ancestors (what hearty souls they were) from even just a generation or two back would laugh out loud to hear what people complain about today. I agree with the OP, it's almost embarrassing to read and hear about it.

I'm with Ozark Preacher. I'll keep on keepin on til I can't go anymore. I got to thinking (a dangerous thing to do) back when I was making 2.50 an hour, an hours work bought 10 gallons of gas. Today an hours pay gets me about 8.5 gallons . So I figure im still in the ball game.
RETIRED AND LOVIN IT. Wife Joyce three excellent grandkids and a grumpy ol tomcat
