The exhaust strap furthest to the rear fatigued and broke on an '06 34SS with 18,000 miles some time ago. A couple of wraps of coat hanger wire looped around the frame through what was still attached to the pipe worked well until my next scheduled maintenance visit to the Chevy truck dealer. The repair was made but since that extended part of the exhaust system belonged to Jayco the repair was not covered by the Chevy warranty.

One e-mail to Jayco and I was told to send them the repair receipt and I would be reimbursed for the full cost. I did, they did and all is right with the world. No muss, no fuss and no hassles.

I'll have to take a look at mine to see if it's ready to go. Guess I need to pack some coat hanger wire just in case

The rear hanger on mine did the same thing. Jayco dealer took car of it since it was, like you said something Jayco added.

When I arrived at the Jayco factory last month to have a number of things fixed (in one day that would have taken the dealer weeks after an 8 week wait for an appointment) a fellow was just getting set to leave in his Seneca 35GS. It has been in the repair facility for many months. He told me his rear exhaust hanger had broken last year as well and that it broke again after they re-welded it.

The hanger was on my list as we'd made a fix on our own after it broke (and we only thought to look because of comments made on our Kodiak forum). When we reviewed the work order prior to departing from Middlebury I was interested to read their comment. It said "customer made a temporary repair" "customer repair is sufficient" - certainly didn't expect that. On the other hand, what I did was reattach it with chain links into an eye bolt so it is unlikely to brake again and then wired it so it can take some movement but not hit the frame when going over a rough road and it moves around. Certainly not a slick looking job but I guess they recognize a solid fix when they see it.

In this photo you can see where it broke on the frame and there just happened to be a hole in the frame that was in the right spot for an eye bolt (and I got a very strong eye bolt since this angle is the worst for such a bolt - but the weight on it is not that heavy). The wire is also very strong and it was used to provide belt and suspenders protection and to keep the pipe an inch or so away from the frame when it shakes.

Mine has broken twice already. When it was repaired the 1st time they used the same 39 cent Pep Boys clamps that Jayco used originally. The 2nd time they fixed it they used a slightly more substantial universal clamp that should last at least 1,000 miles.
Why does Jayco remove the factory exhaust that exited the right side and was supported by GM clamps that are capable of supporting a diesel exhaust system and put this junk on ?
When, not if, it breaks again I guess I will just get it done at a muffler shop.

My Seneca had the same problem. Broke two in the first 3000 mi. Don't have any idea why they felt it was important to put the exhaust out the driverside and use the cheap hangers....

My Guess (and I stress guess)

Do your Senecas have stretched wheelbases? If they have, then the drive shaft was changed to lengthen it and the exhaust system had to be lengthened as well. That meant new pieces. Thus, they source their own junk and the lowest bidder wins. For my Greyhawk, the drive shaft now has an extra section and an extra U joint to lubricate. And, of course, the exhaust is now longer as well. When I took a good look at this I started to ask myself why they welded it when they could have done something more effective that wouldn't brake so easily? The answer I got from an automotive engineer was COST.

As an example, we had one of our wheel covers collapse from fatigue in late December. We think the heat of the sun did the dirty work. It looks like polished aluminum of course, but it is plastic. Turns out they are not GM components and Jayco sources them itself. Guess where they came from? Yep, CHINA.

The annoying thing about the stretched wheelbase is that the driveshaft no longer carries a GM warranty. In fact, when one reads the GM policy it may be that the transmission, driveshaft and rear end no longer are covered by GM. Jayco covers them for 2 years. What does that do to the five year warranty on the Allison Transmission?

One of the members of our Kodiak group posted the GM policy for wheelbase modifications. It appeared pretty clear that the users were to be informed that certain components of the vehicle are no longer covered by GM and that owners should NOT expect to get parts at GM. I sure never read anything to that effect in the Jayco literature and just assumed, as is the case with the Ford chassis, that it would be covered by GM.

Mine is a 34SS with an unstretched wheelbase. So they can't use that excuse on mine.

No. It was the section that Jayco changed from right side exit to left side exit. The muffler and forward were all left as OEM. Both cheapy universal light duty clamps that Jayco welded to the frame broke off. The 1st time they both broke and I actually had to stop and remove the whole section of pipe from the muffler on back and bring it home in the trailer.
