These specifications are for 2008 models, the 2009 models are TBD, but what little Ford has leaked to the press says that the Super Crew cabs will be offered with the Heavy Duty Payload Package.

When I was looking last year, I was told that I could order a Ford 150 crew cab with a 8 ft box, and in looking in the brochure, it was listed there also.

I didn't like the cab style and settled for an Ex Cab 1500 GM w/8ft box.

Neither Ford F-150 or Chevy 1500 have ever offered an 8 ft box with the crew cab configuration. The 8 foot box can be ordered with with the extended cab howeve

One thing to note here when talking about the heavy duty F-150 payload package. There is also a trailer tow package with an 11,000# tow rating that comes in adition to the Heavy duty payload package and changes the tired from D rated to E rated tires. But the combonation is ONLY availible in regular cab 145 inch wheel base with 8 foot bed and 2wd. This is a very hard truck to find on any Ford lot. But it has a load capacity of 3050# witch is equal to most 3/4 tons. The one roomer from Ford that I have read in several trade papers and on line is that Ford is going to offer this combonation of heavy duty payload and 11,000#+ trailer tow capacity on MOST of its 150's. Also these numbers, especially the tailer tow capacity, might be increasing to 11,400 or greater? with the "E" (10ply) rated tires. These numbers will probably become official sometime late June or early July as that is the time that Ford usually updates its information for the comming year. With the gas prices and the slight advantage of fuel mileage of a 1/2 ton over a 3/4 ton you are going to see a lot of emphasis on half tons for pulling and hauling. If the price of gas hits 6 bucks it all be for naught? Lets hope not.

Interesting, now I have to go back and find that brochure.
I'm sure it/they said they were coming out in the spring of 07 with a 150 w/8ft box.

Yes, GM or Dodge doesn't offer it. That's why I "settled" for the ex cab.

And the Ford web site doesn't allow a crew w/8ft box. I wonder what happened.

Ford has always offered a shorter then "short bed" bed on their SuperCrew F150s. Maybe what you read was that they were going to offer a regular short bed (6'8") on them now?

Stupid question but I have seen the reference in several post and am unfamiliar with the term. What is a floating axle, what is the difference/advantage/disadvantage, and which truck has which?

MPG probably won't be any different than an "obvious" 3/4 T truck.
But as long as people think it is lighter and still carries the same capacity...
Can u say marketing strategy?
This is really just reverse psychology from what they used in the past.
Take badging up trucks in "numbers" that did not have anything to do with the actual load capacity.
Thing is that the quality of the parts has to be up to the challenge, and hence the weight of the truck will always tend to go up when the GVWR climbs.
Unless...
they truly start doing major things to lighten AND strengthen in the engineering department. But trucks have been all about modest engineering (not leading edge) and charging maximum dollars for it in the last 30 years.
The biggest differences have been all the frills that have been added, not the technology underneath the basic structure.
All automotive steel has gotten lighter, and designs have gotten more complex, but that is across the board with all vehicles. It isn't exclusive to truck design. Trucks have had a tendency to be tried an true, simplistic things that simply worked and held up. That is a good thing, not bad. But going by that trend, don't expect some type of miraculous reinvention of the vehicle.

In simple terms a floating axle only drives the wheels (applies torque), it doesn't carry the weight. Hence, you can pull the axles out and not have the wheel fall off the truck. These are usually identified by huge axle hub ends with a LOT of little bolts holding them in place.
You cannot pull an axle out of a non-floater without the wheel assembly coming with.
