Sure people don't like to live in places like Hollywood, Malibu, San Francisco, Tiburon, San Diego. ...
why would they?

Certainly like to convince about 3/4 of the people in my town that Charlotte is a better place to live or any place else as far as that is concerned, especially those gun toting wall artists. .

These lists are usually based on a formula that covers A to Z factors.
This equation probably includes Crime, which is why Orlando did not make the list.
So it appears they didn't just throw darts at the wall to get This Year's Favorite City.

WOW!I guess crime wasn't included in that study.I work in charlotte but sure wouldn't live there.About eighty percent of the people that live in charlotte are from other places. Its really hard to find someone that was born and raised in charlotte.

Without debating the absolute merits, and having spent some time in all three places, I would not rank either Charlotte or Greenville above Asheville....but that's just my opinion and I missed the survey.

why would they? I compared the cost of living of my current locale with that of Charlotte NC:
SF Bay Area vs. Charlotte
It is now on my list of places to move to when I retire in about 8-10 years.
$80K of income here only take a little over $40K in Charlotte to enjoy the same standard of living. Plus, it is the hub of NASCAR.

I looked @ your site MFinCA,and its way off;If you make 40K around here that will get you a apartment in one of the less desired areas.A $1000 per month will get you a one bedroom apartment in a good area.A 1500 sq.ft.house new will cost between $150--250K.Groceries per week for a family of two will cost appox.$120,and thats not eating steak, shrimp, and etc.Gas is $3.75 a gallon right now,and taxes are way to much in charlotte. If you make around 75K and live modestly and stay about twenty miles from charlotte then you can make it.I do agree that it is a little cheaper than california but only on houses.

If I sold my 1650 sq ft. home in the overpriced Bay Area, I could buy 2 of those 1500 sq. ft. homes there and have enough $$ left over to purchase a new Sunnybrook Titan 5er and a brand new Ford F-450 truck for cash.
My current home is a zero-lot line one. I have no side yard to speak of and my 200 sq. ft. of lawn gets mowed in 15 minutes (5 minutes to mow--10 minutes to get the mower out of the garage and put it back). With so little room, I have to pay $900 per year to store my trailer in a RV storage place about 7 miles from my home.
Gas is thisclose to $4.00 for RUL here. Property taxes on my place are about $350 per month. Sales tax rate is 8.75%. Earthquake insurance is $1400 per year.
In Charlotte, I would have no house payment, lower property taxes, and no earthquake insurance. The rental income from the 2nd unit could pay for a lot of groceries & gas. I would buy a home on a corner lot and have enough land to store the 5er on it.
This move is beginning to look better and better to me all the time.

*bzzzt* Wrong. Even when we were transferred to the area almost 20 years ago (we've been long gone for >10 years and are happy we moved), seeing a native Charlottean was so strange that people would gather around and stare at one when they were found. Charlotte is now largely a transplant mecca and, IMO, is not a city that can be called "southern".
NC overall is a great place to live, but Charlotte sucks like a Hoover
