Im on the fence, and need you to push me off please. I have a 23 foot Starcraft boat and trailer, with Mercruiser 5 litre Bravo III outdrive - specs says altogether it weighs 5500 pounds, me and the wife and kids eat lots of burgers, so add some more to that GVW.

I have in my sights a 2004 Buick Rainier with 5.3 V8 rated for 6500 pounds ( with 20,000 miles on odometer ), and she is up against a 2002 Cadi Escalade SUV, with a big ole Vortec 6.0 litre block rated for over 8000 pounds ( 60,000 miles on the odometer ).

Love the Cadi, but the Rainier cheaper on fuel, but the Cadi is soooo nice inside, any wise words to lean me one way or the other.

Thanks for your time...

No contest, get the Escalade. The Rainer can not tow that weight comfortably, take it to the scale for a true weight just to be sure. The Rainer will not get all that much better fuel mileage anyway. May as well be happy!

My vote is for the Caddy, get a real truck to tow with. Imagine trying to pull the boat out of a steep/sloppy ramp with the Buick.

I bet in another month or two, you can find a newer Caddy or loaded Tahoe for about the same price as the '02 your looking at. There are several around here for "take over payments". Makes buying gas a little easier when you bought on the cheap.

I'd go for the fuel mileage of the Buick if it were me. A BOAT is about the easiest tow you can find due to the aerodynamics of the shape so the Buick should do just fine. Of course it SOUNDS like you really want the Cadillac so I'm not sure why you're asking

I was asking cuz I'm new to towing and didnt want to be under powered on highway and most important get stuck on the boat ramp - me seen a couple of people with jeeps and envoys having a tough time getting the boat and trailer out of the lake. Thanks for the input

The gas mileage difference will be MARGINAL. I had a TrailBlazer with the Inline 6 and never saw better than 15 MPG. I'd say definitely the Escalade, if only for the resale value. The Rainier is in the top 10 for worst resale values.

Ditto on the TrailBlazer. Ours was a super rig but really mad that a V8 Tahoe got better mileage than my I6. I doubt your mileage would be much different between the two. You are going to be buying a lot of gas either way. May as well have the Caddy!!!
