Do the presence of LOTS of crawdeads as we used to call em, indicate puluted water? I grew up in west central Ohio in the 50-60s. ALL the lake and streams were full of mud an******and MILLIONS of crawdeads. We used em for bait. A quick drift witha 'sein net' and U'd come up with dozens. Many big enough to take off a finger. I remember the Miami river that wrapped around our town of Piqua and the meat packing Co. that pumped raw animal part directly into the river. GHAaa, the crawdeads and CARP were huge. Its interesting to me today that just a mile downstream from there was where everyone waterskied!!! Those were the "good ol days". I've been back to visit and the lakes and river are clean. I can even see the bottom of the river which really amazes me! BUT, there are NO crawdeads anymore. I also lived in south Louisiana for 6 years and that place is lousy with crawdeads...poluted to death too. No polution, No crawdeads? What ya think?

Me think crawdads like muddy water. Thus the name "mudbugs".

I have seen lots of them in very clear water. the lakes in northern NM are full of them. They are a different color there tho.

Lots of crawdads in the spring fed creeks around here. Water is crystal clear. I'm not sure I agree with your hypothesis.
When I was a kid, we used to fish several small lakes in the area. On one particular sunny day, we were at one of our favorite spots and decided to pull up on a gravel bar and eat lunch. While eating, we watched in amazement and disbelief as a crawdad that had to be close to 10 maybe even 12 inches long crawled up onto the gravel bar beside the boat and sat there in the sun for several minutes. It looked like he was just sunning himself. After he had enough sun, he slowly backed back into the lake. That was without a doubt the largest crawdad I have ever seen, more like a freshwater lobster! That lake was also full of bass and bluegill, so I don't think it was too polluted either.

Crawfish
According to a number of sources Crawfish have difficulty tolerating polluted water. I have posted one source.

If a group of us from Louisiana get's over that way, you won't have a problem with them anymore!
We'll even bring our own pots and seasoning.....

Growing up as kids we'd fish them out of their nests they built in the bar ditch in front of grandma's house using string and a piece of bacon. They did love to dig in the mud. But polluted - not at all. We had a very clear and clean creek near our house where there were plenty of them too. Bring a few home in a bucket and watch the cat play with them.
Last night the wife and I put away 4 pounds - a local restaurant had a special - $2.99 a pound. Good eatin'. My thumb is sore this morning.

i has lots O Funs catchin' crawdaddies.........on warm nites i use a bit of nightcrawler on a hook, line, pole, yank em in, then put em ina 5 gallon plastic bucket of water....................................the bass, cat, crappie, bluegill shure love em.................
