So after 6 years of NOT being in a tent we went out last weekend and got back to the "basics" while the old, gas guzzling RV sat in the backyard. I'm happy to report it went quite well! It was rough setting up- took probably 2 hours of wrasslin and fighting with the new Wenzel Titan tent and a new screen in canopy,,,,,, at one point I got so annoyed I seriously contemplated beating my wife and kids with the tent poles,,,, Luckily for them their was plenty of beer on hand!

Take down went much smoother, and it was actualy like camping again! our air mattress wasn't as comfortable as our queen sized bed in the RV but it was close- we had a heated mattress pad on it and a thick comforter. The wife didn't want to give up her bathroom so I bought one of these little porta pottie things along with a fold up hunters blind tent for privacy. I didn't want to go back to worrying about keeping things iced in a cooler to keep the essentials cold (beer,,,,,, and food) so I bought a nifty little fridgerator to keep things cool.

The only downside was when we got home we discovered that my 12 year old son had picked up a couple of ticks which I had to carefully pluck out with tweezers (turns out setting them on fire actualy creates bigger problems!) one of the ticks was in my kids ear, but I was able to succesfully remove the both of them without leaving pieces of the ticks in my kid (I hear that's a bad thing) I told the kid next time we camp to not be "feeding the ticks!" (all this time we thought it was the bears you shouldn't be feeding!)

Tent camping rocks, it's good to be back!

YEEHAW!

You may have company........on the tent seen.

We just bought a tent our self. Since we all the essentials like you to make it as comfortable as possible. We plan to do the same a couple of times this year.

As gas climbs and since the creature comforts are so accessible this year....it just may be the way to go.

One thing that never occured to me until we were out tent camping was how little time we actualy spent in the rv while camping- Turns out that other than sleeping were outside anyways. Even my youngest kid who was the biggest complainer about going from rv to tent admitted that it was just as fun in a tent. We will see what he has to say when we hit some rain though! LoL!

I would NEVER go back to a TENT... If I down size it would be to a Pop-Up. Sleeping on the ground is not going to happen. Spent to many years sleeping is tents, courtesy of Uncle Sam. You can probably pull a Pop-Up and only get 1 to 2 MPG difference in milage. My old Suburban never knew it was back there when in tow.

Bah!~ I had a nice hardside pup with a 14 foot box, recirculating toilet heat and air before I went with the RV. I suppose that we will probably end up with another pup at some point but when we do it will be a smaller one- for now the tent is working fine and the air mattress/heated pad/comforter combo is more comfortable than that pup ever was.

Ticks....we found that they don't like hydrogen peroxide on them so they back right out. Then you can send them to tick heaven.

That's a great tip, thanks! One park nearby that we love to goto seems to have alot of ticks, so that tip will come in handy.

I thought the same thing...

I'll never go back to a tent, but if it works for you...great! Just don't try to sell me on it...
