I moved in connection with my work every few weeks. On the road for over 40 years. Have set up my dish-network dish for a dozen years with a simple compass. My dish is permanently fastened to a round plastic platform about three feet in diameter. I stake it in the ground with tent pins when I have located the signal.
I recently upgraded to a new receiver and dish. It is so fussy about it's level and directional setting. In the past I could position the dish on a flat piece of ground and with my compass ... point it southwest and find the satelite in like .... a minute or less. I use an inline winegard satellite finder in the line and tune right in on the satellite.
With this new setup it take me forever. And it seems unless I am on a flat concrete platform ... perfectly level ... it takes me forever. The satelite finder begins to sing just as soon as it gets close to honeing in on the satellite. But unless it is right on the bulls eye, perfectly honed in ... I do not have a signal in the fifth wheel.
Surely someone out there has come across a platform or mount that works with a minimum of frustration. I don't want anything mounted on top of my unit. HELP!!
Jerry
If this post needs to be moved to another location ... no problem with me

Consicer buying a Align-A-Site. It will let you aim your dish without leveling it. I think the website is www.alignasite.com

buy a Vue Cube and problem solved. put chair leveling tips on the base and it should be easier to level your current unit. I have one of the portable plastic based units sold at camping world and before I got the adjustable feet from a 3rd party supplier IIRC I used pebbles, peanuts, etc., under it on the picnic table.

2nd vote for the Bullseye. Top quality, versatile, packs small, absolutely stays in place, and soooo simple. Add the align-a-site for the trees.

If you were this good at aligning a dish, why would the new one be any harder ?
Did you go from a 1 LNB dish to a 2 LNB dish ? And if so, do you need the 2nd LNB ? If not, cover it while aligning it.
I don't see why changing dishes should make it any harder to align, unless you have now added the skew adjustment for the 2nd LNB, in which case leveling becomes important using the skew adjustment.
When I had Dish Network, I found it very hard to align, even w/ a single LNB dish. And even after I found the 119 sat, it could still take 20 minutes to get a picture sometimes because of the "check switch" logal and every other reason it could think of to not give me a pic, including telling me my smart card was out of date etc etc. I don't miss it a bit.

Go to Lowes or Home Depol and buy a Surveyor Tri-pod. It makes set very simple. Set Tri-pod and make sure its level, when its level mount the Dish and again make sure you have the Tri-pod level. The set the Dish to the correst elevation and tilt. Then point the Dish to the Southwest. I also have whats called a Bird and very seldom have to use it. The Surveyor type Tri-pod legs can be adjusted to make the Tri-pod level. I am using a 5 LNB HD dish and have set it up in many different States. The single LNB's didn't have to be exactly level. Good Luck.. GBY.....

I found this to be the best out there.
I have the 1000.2 dish and this tripod makes it easy to set up. All 3 legs easily adjustable while standing up. It has a hand tighten adjustment for swinging to find azimuth.
I got the combo package that comes with finder, compass, level bubble, carry bag, tie down, spreader control.
Not cheap but very quality product...
