While I would agree that a 2500 truck without a hitch seems silly, I really have to say your friend should have checked the truck more carefully before signing the papers.

Correct. He chose to sign the papers.

I agree it is strange for a 2500 to not have a receiver. I looked at a new Ford F250 last year that also did not have a receiver (hard to believe). On the other hand, in 2005 a coworker bought a brand new Dodge Ram 1500, 4.7 V8, 3.55 gear, no tow package listed on the sticker, but it had a factory receiver, factory 7 way round plug, and a large factory transmission cooler.

Trailer Tow Group $335
Package includes >>
750-Ampere Maintenance-Free Battery
Class IV Receiver Hitch
7-Pin Wiring Harness

Without this option he is able to select whichever receiver hitch he desires. A 7 pin harness is not difficult to install, and the battery? The standard battery should do him fine. Appears to be nothing more than a slight inconvenience at most.

The dealership ordered the truck this way from Dodge. Now is great time to upgrade to a better hitch. While I prefer the Torklift SuperHitch, he could also go with the Reese Titan V.

Interesting since on my '07 2500 the receiver was an integral part of the frame. (rear cross member) Wonder what they have in a truck without a hitch?? In order to put on the Putnam class 5 (so I could use the tow rating of the truck) we had to cut off the receiver part of the hitch and leave the cross member in place. Worked fine but more than just a bolt on.

It is an option , you get the wiring and the receiver in the towing option

Exactly! It was a towing package option on my 2500 Dodge Ram.

I've yet to see a receiver/hitch on a truck from the factory that wasn't there because the window sticker said "trailer" or "tow" package.

I'd say that Laramie may not have as high an output alternator, heavier cooling, and even the auxillary cooler for the Auto tranny, if so equipped with auto tranny. Also it may not even have the 3.73 rear end either.

I'm not too up on what comes with the Dodge trailer towing package, but I'm sure someone here could post it.

Too add a little more info this is a CTD 6 speed auto with the exhaust brake and it does have the Brake Control wiring under the dash and plug wire in Glove box. He doesn't really tow on the bumper anyway, But will be installing a 5er hitch, so just found it odd that it wasn't a norm on this type of truck. My looking under the back I didnt see a Brake Control Wire for the trailer or the charge line either, hope they are buried. The Local RV dealer is going to install the 7 way for him Monday anyway.

I bought my 3500 without the receiver hitch or the 7 pin plug.

When I asked why they weren't there the salesman stated that for many of these trucks they were added aftermarket to fit the wants of the buyer.

I opted for the Putnam XDR which has the highest tow/wieght rating that I am aware of with the standard 2 inch ball mounts. Mind you, you must make sure to purchase the correct solid ball mount to gain the benefits. Also installing the 7 pin plug was also easy to do.

When I bought my 07 2500 HD my salesman said that Dodge didn't sell any 2500/3500 without a tow package?? How about that a salesman didn't know what he was talking about!!!!

A few years ago, if you didn't order the tow package, you got nothing. No trailer wiring embedded in the factory wiring harness to plug into, no brake control wiring sitting under the dash, and no hitch at all. All the trailer and brake control wiring had to be run seperately from front to back, all custom.
