Just bought a 1992 conquest. The sealant around the top of the windows is pealing so i took it all off around the window. what should i clean the surface with before i reseal it?
If you really want to do it right you need to remove the windows, clean off all caulking and silicon and re-install the windows with new butyl putty tape. After removing the windows, use a putty knife or painters tool to clean the surface of the RV and the windows. A mild solvent, paint thinner or WD-40 will help remove all the residue. After re-installing the windows properly, you should not have to use additional caulking or siliconing around the edges of the windows.

I will never use silicone as a sealer-over the years have formed a opinion that it is garbage for anything that moves on land or water. There are a number of polyurethane sealers around that do a great job.The previous owner of my Conquest had resealed everywhere around a window except where the leak was-the rubber gasket channel that holds the glass in place-I reset the glass with a small bead of black polyurethane sealer and that cured the problem-also spent three times the amount of time cleaning off sealer that should never have been applied .I use 3M 5200 for marine and PL roof and flashing sealer on the RV for anything that the roll tape sealers won't be used for.
