We have been about every place in the lower states, at least once, and some of the bigger places like Yellow Stone four times, so all that was left was Alaska. Though the plans are not firmed up yet, Im now leaning toward not going, and its not because were poor, and cant afford it, we can if we want to.
But long range trips will stop for almost every one, sooner or later if prices keep rising.
So at $4. you will go? What about $5. $6. $7. $10. $20. per Gal will you still go then? Whats your squeal point?

We just purchased a Prius and are weighing taking that and leaving TC at home and tent camping when weather permits. And if you believe that I want to sell you a hunting vacation with Dick Cheney.

It will be interesting to see how much this slows the tourism and campers from out of state.

Over on the "fuel at 4.89" thread a guy just reported that his friend up there is paying $7.00 for diesel - or will be when the next shipment arrives, his supplier tells him. I hope nobody has to leave the rig up there because they can't buy return fuel. :-)

Good question above for the "come hell or high water" guys - what's your squeal point - $20, $50. Everyone has his limit. Mine was a couple weeks ago when it hit $3.50 (Ahh, the good old days of April)

The fuel costs a thousand or so more. If you can't afford the difference, you shouldn't have been planning to go in the first place.

I think you have it all wrong. many people with children plan on summer trips and save all winter long, then the price goes up every day like it has for gas, and the family has to change their plans. It has happened a lot in the last few weeks, and you are saying they should not have planed in the first place?

Good point woodworker. I thought it was a rather insensitive remark too - and perhaps a bit elitist as well. He probably didn't mean it to come out that way. That happens to all of us.

There is nothing worst then laying on your death bed the wishing you had eaten more stake and ice cream and taken that trip to Alaska. Just go for it and enjoy

No question you're right, Roadrunner. I wish I could! My wife could do that (she also isn't bothered when she drops a couple hundred in a slot machine - while my whole evening is ruined). I was a painting contractor and every penny I earned was by sweat and blood for fifty years - and enforcing rigid spending discipline at home!. Our house, cars and rv are all clear, our investments have done well, our kids are grown, we're in our seventies - and we should, as you say, go for it.

I know you're right! I need a psychiatrist!! :-)

We leave for Alaska June 10 providing nothing goes wrong. We both retired this year and are in good health.

Who knows if we can afford the trip in the future or if our health will allow such a trip later.

We have planned this trip for a couple of years and WE ARE GOING!

Jack, you could get the fuel for what a psychiatrist would cost.
