Not this year. We are still thinking about doing the trip in the future. The big problem for us is NO WalMart RV parks along the way.

Hi, I just checked gasbuddy and the price of diesel in BC ranges from $4.80 to a ridiculous $5.50 per U.S. gallon, Alaska ranges from $4.33 to $5.16.
Reg gas BC is $4.33 to $5.16 and Alaska is $3.69 to $4.98.
BC prices based on dollar parity at X per liter multiplied by 3.8 rounded out to the closest penny.
This is just for information at todays prices and not meant to upset anybody.
We had planned a cross Canada and New England trip for this year and are still going. I figured out that not eating in restaurants as much as we used to, and slowing down to 55-60 MPH will make up the extra fuel costs.

I was curious what it would take to take a trip from St. Louis, MO to Anchorage, AK and used Gasbuddy to calculate fuel (gas) costs for the trip. The US/Canadian exchange rate was almost 1/1 so I used that rate to convert from Canadian liters and cost to US cost per gallon. I would imagine that diesel cost would be higher, but didn't check it out.
I made the trip from the Washington, DC area and return via Washington State, Texas and return in 1995 and drove 15,000 at a total cost of $2231 for gas. No toad, just a 1995 Flair.
1995= .15cent/mile
2008= .60cent/mile
City---------Gallons----Miles---Cost------------Total
St. Louis, MO---75-------0------3.54------------$265.50
Sioux City, IA--66.35---530-----3.45------------$228.56
Fargo, ND-------40.5----324-----3.64------------$147.42
Winnipeg--------28.1----225-----4.65------------$130.83
Saskatoon-------60------480-----4.91------------$294.78
Edmonton--------41.2----330-----4.50------------$185.64
Dawson Creek----45.7----365-----4.73------------$215.86
Ft. Nelson------36.3----290-----4.92------------$178.37
Whitehorse------73.8----590-----4.92------------$362.89
Tok, AK---------48.75---390-----3.80------------$185.25
Fairbanks, AK---25------200-----3.79-------------$94.75
Anchorage, AK---33.8----270-----3.71------------$125.21
Miles==> 3994 Total Cost===> $$2415.06
Above for informational purposes only. Not meant to cause any arguments, etc. Take it for what it is worth
BTW: The trip was worth every penny we spent.

We can afford it but we're just too tight. Can't handle those prices mentally -keeps me irritated and spoils the trip. Sad, isn't it?

If it were in the plan instead of the trip to Maine we ARE taking, I would still do it. I have done the Oregon to Anchorage trip four times and the experience is well worth it. When it's my turn, I want to have NOTHING left on my "Bucket List". We will do the AK trip in the future so my DW can experience it since we weren't together when I did the trips in the past.

I have a friend who has lived in Alaska for many years, both in the cities and in smaller communities. He wrote in his last message to me that the price of fuel will go up $2.00/gallon to over $7.00 as soon as the barge arrives with new fuel for the year. He adds that prices of everything else also are already affected and rising quickly. It is even harder on the folks that live there who have limited job opportunities at all times and those are now drying up too, he says.

We had always wanted to make the journey. However Parkinson's caught up to me before that happened. Good health would see us going despite high fuel costs. We leave May 27th for Alaska on a 14 day land-cruise package. Leaving the driving to Holland America. Point is, it may be later than you think!

I was hoping for lots of people staying home, means uncrowded campgrounds, fewer idiots on the road. We have paid for our ferry ride back from Alaska so I guess we are committed to going. I told the kids their inheritance might be smaller, but I plan on driving our diesel truck under 1500rpms for max mileage.
We are driving from Ohio and will end up in Reno before we head home.
I feel badly for ordinary working people with these fuel prices, thank god our kids are raised and house is paid for, otherwise I would not be so glib about the mess this country is sliding into.
