what type of rider are you?
In the dunes I like to move. This quad will be strictly for those times I wanna just go. I will ride with the kids there too, but I just want to be happy climbing and roosting.
what is your height/weight?
I'm 6' 260 I'm a big guy and my 250R worked great for me.
are you going to be strictly sand, or go in the dirt too? This quad will be for the dunes. I have a Arctic Cat for regular stuff.
do you want out of the box performance, or do you plan on modding your ride?
Out the Box.
do you need comfort, or can you sit on a rock all day? Comfort is nice...I for sure don't want a '81 ATC 250R
Yes, I sold my 250R. I regret it all the time.
I might have to try out a Raptor 700. The local dealer has a place to try them out.
I'd Rather be in Moab!

I see TRX250R's regularly here in San Diego in the Cycle Trader. Shouldn't be tough to find one either here in CA or in AZ, don't know about CO.

Others have said it already and I will back it up, you wont find a better bike than the 250r for the sand, i have traded rides on most of the fourstrokes even modded ones, but they don't compare to the 250r that just becomes a part of you and will effortlessly take you wherever you want to go. Our group has been duning for a long time and we have about 18 250r's 1 450r and 4 yfz's. Most of us are running pro-x jugs with 310cc some powervalved some not. We have a couple of 330's and even a 350. We are all in our 40's and even all the wifes ride the r's and wouldn't give them up except for the times they can't get them to start. If you are looking for an R let me know. Some of the bikes are going on 5 years on the same top end. You WILL be disappointed with any other bike if you truely loved your R. The yfz is the closest in "feeling" if you must go 4 stroke

I have ridden the Yamaha yfz 450,660,700 at Pismo the 660 Raptor (my quad)is a good quad but not on the same level as 700 Raptor or 450. The 700 has more power and is not as top heavy as my 660 overall I liked the 700 it's a easy quad to ride fast or slow.
The Yamaha YFZ 450 doesn't like to go slow it's like a sand rocket. That thing is a kick to ride, the power comes on like a stick of TNT. If you like popping wheelies in all gears and like to run wide open most of the time the 450 is for you.
I'm not 20 any more so as fun as the 450 was to ride I could see myself getting hurt on it. so when I upgrade I will go with the 700. Try to match the quad to your balls. good luck

my cousin hadto constantly turn around and go back to camp when following us on our DS's....there were some climbs his bike just wouldnt do...
it would climb comp, but was pretty slow....my cousin weighs about a buck 80

When comparing 450 Quads- Make sure you do your homework above and beyond this thread.
There are a lot of people espousing the yamaha 450 and for good reason- it was "the first with the most" in terms of competitive 4 strokes and most camps have one in their midst- its the most ridden competition 4 stroke of them all.
Dont get me wrong its an awesome quad and there is a lot to like about it, but it isn't as technologically advanced as others any more. Flatly put Yamaha has been resting on it and got caught flat footed this year.
Its missing 3 important features that some of the other 450's have.
A reverse gear - you'll get used to having this once you've ridden a bike with it.
Fuel injection- easier starting, bike runs right no matter where you are riding from Glamis to Mt Pinos. With FI- the throttle doesn't need nearly as stiff of a return spring making riding a long time easier on the hands.
An aluminum Frame- allows for a reverse gear with no weight penalty. (a few quads have this now (700 raptor is steel so is the 450)
The YFZ 450 is a great bike, but isnt the clear leader of the 450's anymore.
