During a recent family meeting we were discussing our camping plans for Memorial Day weekend. We have several acres on a nearby lake and boondock there several times a year. I don’t know if our boys have become bored with the “Luxury” camping in the MH (Fridge, TV, DVD, Microwave, running water, etc.) or have been watching too many “Survival Man” episodes, but they have challenged Mom and myself to a survival camping trip at the lake. Parents vs. the boys. Our equipment will be limited to just tents, sleeping bags and mess kits. Our food will be limited to a rationed portion of fresh vegtables that we’ve grown in our garden at home and whatever we’re able catch, trap or forage around the lake. No coolers, grills, stoves, lanterns or electonic devices of any kind. Any ideas on how we can determine a winner? BTW……..We will take the MH with us, but lock the door until a winner is declared. (My DW’s idea)

I would declare the boys the winners and stay in the MH. They can show how tough they are by playing Survivor by themselves. They can be the winner by foraging for food and staying in the tent and you can be the loser by having to stay in the MH with all the "Luxuries"

Good luck you may need it.

0h, this is an easy one...the winner is determined by who can do the fanciest and/or best meal alone - without all the amenities...i.e.: baking a cake over an open fire (need me to tell ya how?) or bake bread (same way)...hee,hee...I LOVE IT when people get amazed at my cooking skills over an open fire. Bet the boys can't do THAT...you've got an advantage they don't have ( and this isn't meant to be sexist...) but you've got a woman on your team...we're creative and cook - at least most of them do - a lot of men cook too, but since mine doesn't hence the comments.

Challenge them to a meal - Cobbler in a dutch oven (which we all know is easy), bread or a cake baked over an open fire, and other foods. Can't wait to see how this ends. Have fun!

Thanks for everyone's interest in our families little adventure. I will post an update as to the results of our outing, but I tend to agree with campingrandma, barring any unforseen catastrophies, we will all be winners! Sometimes it's good to get back to the "basics". It can revive one's appreciation for where we are in life. It's good for the soul! I can't wait for Memorial Day weekend!

I too wish you all well and lots of fun. Chances are there will be lots of laughter.

However, I just made myself a promise to never get into a discussion with my daughter about Survivor, camping without luxuries, etc. Why risk it?

Good luck!

ITA with campingrandma! WTG...and I hope all of you will have a great time.

BTW...will you be able to bring a can of beans? Just in case you can't catch any protein to eat...it sure can fill you up fast! LOL.

Do let us know how it went.

HAPPY CAMPING!!

Sneak out there a week in advance and hide some canned-goods under a pile of rocks!
