We plan on leaving our MH in Haines and taking the ferry to Skagway either on foot or with our bikes, or possibly dingy. Can Skagway be done on foot? How far is the cemetary outside of town? Was Skagway so hilly as to make biking difficult? Thanks

It's compact and flat , very good for walking. The cemetery is about a mile and a half away. Stop in the Gold Rush Park on your way. Have fun!

Here is a photo of Skagway, one of the 5 cruise ships in that day, airport runway in the fore ground. The cemetery is out of the photo to the left. Skagway is located in a flat narrow valley down by the fjord. It could be walked or biked. There are also tours around town if you prefer to ride with a tour guide. Skagway is a real Jekyll and Hyde community, depending on whether the cruise ships are in port or not. You can have an extra 10 to 15,000 people in town when the ships are docked and the passengers are off loaded. It is a fun place to spend a few days doing all the tourist stuff, eating fresh sea food, riding the narrow gauge railroad, walking the shops and historic buildings in town. None of the 3 campgrounds there are too outstanding, IMHO, but all 3 will work as they are not the main reason folks go to Skagway.

We too will be visiting Skagway in June (late). However, we plan on leaving the MH at Whitehorse and take the toad down to Skagway and spend the day. Since we have plenty of time to spend, would you recommend that we take the MH to Skagway and spend a few days there instead of just one?
Later in August, after exploring most of the possible towns/cities in Alaska, we will be taking the Marine Hwy Ferry out of Haines. Maybe it would be better to wait until then to visit Skagway. I've heard that the train is not all what it is cracked up to be, but plan on doing it anyway if no fog/clouds are present.

We did a day trip from Whitehorse. The best part of the day was the beautiful drive over and back. Would not have enjoyed as much if we had the rig as many of the pull outs would not have accommodated it. A couple of hours in town and the train ride was enough of Skagway for us. Could have done the drive a couple more times.

I enjoy Skagway and usually take my RV there. Last trip, 2004, we stayed at one of the in town campgrounds for 3 or 4 days. During the years I was living in Alaska, Nenana, and happened to be working in Juneau over the weekend, it was fun to catch the ferry to Skagway, spend the night and either ferry or fly back to Juneau Sunday afternoon. Skagway in the fall and winter time somewhat resembles a ghost town with no one but the few permanent Skagwegians there.
The drive from Whitehorse is beautiful, right up there with the drive from Glennallen to Valdez and the road into Stewart BC/Hyder AK. You will see rigs of all sizes in Skagway, lot of good photo oops in town as well as on the road to/from Whitehorse.
Here is a photo taken of an old ore mill on the road from Whitehorse to Skagway. Lots of pull off spots to take photos.

If you're going to spend all your time in Skagway the bikes or walking will be fine, but if you want to see the beginning of the Chilcoot Trail or Dyea, a Toad would be advisable. Tough climb and about 9 miles from the ferry terminal. Cool tours at the Dyea but you get info about them in the NPS Center at Skagway.

The main drag of Skagway can be seen in one day easily by walking. It's mostly jewelry stores anyway and one not-to-miss dance hall musical review of the life of Soapy Smith. However, there is also the White Pass Railroad that goes through Skagway. We didn't take it but probably should have to add to the experience of the ol' days.

I thought the white pass train was well worth the price. I would ride it again if we ever go there again. Yes you can see all of Skagway in a day by foot. It is flat and not very big. I liked it better when the ships were not docked in town.

Take the brothel tour at the Red Onion saloon. We enjoyed Skagway and look forward to going back some day.
