I have purchased a 30' trailer and have a weight distribution system from my last trailer with friction sway control. My last trailer was a Surveyor ultra light 27' I am a little worried about sway with my new trailer since I will be pulling it with short wheelbase 5.4 Expedition. Can I install a dual cam sway control with my existing setup. My trunnion bars are not the spring type and are rectangular on the end by the chains (quality S brand)

Any suggestions on how I can control sway without having to invest in a whole new weight distribution hitch? Since I normall only travel a couple hours away from home would the friction type be OK?

It can probably be added to what you have. Or. Add another sway bar to the other side of the TT tongue.

You should be able to find the opposite side easy enough on line...They are not ambidextrous from what I gather but please correct me if I am wrong.

You do not specify the brand of your existing WD system,; however with the original versions of the Dual Cam you can purchase adapters if your bars do not have the cradle (crook) on them for the cam to rest on. These are usually pretty easily adapted to most bars. May take some grinding etc to make them fit but should not be too bad.

For the length of your TT I would not suggest friction control. It would not be able to handle the 27 feet that well and would be flushing your money.

I love my dual cam!!

Yes, you can add the Reese Dual Cam kit #26001 to your present hitch and bars. See this post that I made recently about it and links to the kit.
The kit looks like this. Notice it has the bolt on ramps for the ends of the bars.

Absolutely go with the dual cam. I just set this up on my Rig 3 weeks ago. Be prepared to do a lot of customization (depending on your spring bars). If it turns out that you do have to customize this setup, your best friend will be a dremal tool, an angle grinder, and BARNEY S!! Any questions you have will be answered by him. Just search for dual cam.

Also, Make sure that the tongue weight of your new trailer does not max out your previous spring bars.

I had the set up pictured by BarneyS and towed a 27' with a Yukon when I went to a 30ft I had to change to heavier bars so I went with a Equalizer 1200#. But that setup will work fine. Retire the friction sway. I have one in the shed and can't give it away.

Thanks everyone for the input. I definitely think I am going to go with the dual cam. If I already have the setup for the friction bar as well would there be any benefit to using both the dual cam and the friction bar or would that be more than I need?

Once I get the dual cam setup is there a lot of adjustment that is needed from time to time?

There is no need for the friction control once you have installed the Dual Cam. In fact, it could even be counterproductive because it may interfere with the operation of the Dual Cam's "return to center" feature.

One the Dual Cam is installed and adjusted correctly, there is normally no need to adjust it again unless you have need to re-adjust the whole hitch because of a different trailer, new truck etc. It may take a few trial and errors to get it adjusted right at the beginning though. It is very important that the Dual Cam be adjusted so the cams ride exactly in the center of the crook of the bars. If they do not, the sway control is greatly lessened and the Dual Cam fights with itself trying to keep the trailer in line.

Once set up you will love the DC. A hint, read the hitch setup sticky. It will tell you (between the lines) to make the initial WD setup with 2 extra links worh of chain before the DC is installed. When the DC goes on it takes up that amount.
