WE are planning a summer RV trip up to the DC area...I am looking for a recommended campground somewhere between Richmond and DC(preferably close enough to DC to day trips) that we can spend 4-5 nights...would like to have something that is a little upscale(but reasonable) with a swimming pool, full hook ups, etc to spend some quiet downtime when not fighting the DC traffic..any and all suggestions greatly appreciated..we have a 35 foot MH with slides..and i am not familar with the area at all!!

Thanks for your help

Lake Fairfax Campground is where we stayed last July. Nice, quiet, CG, with water and elec. You have to drive to pull-up dumpsite, pump with macerator with long hose, or use tote to dump...

Close to DC Metro, small water park, etc. Very convenient, clean, and reasonably priced.

Cherry Hill campground near College Park, Maryland will fill the bill quite nicely for you, except it isn't between DC & Richmond. The morning and evening traffic down the I-95 corridor is horrendous in Northern Virginia. Drive a little farther one time in the MH and you can avoid that.

If you do a search on Cherry Hill you will find a ton of information on the campground.

If you decide to not stay at Cherry Hill and want to stay in Virginia, then stay at a campground near a Metro Station. Clean, efficient and it will take you downtown easily. There is a bus at Cherry Hill that will take you to the Metro. Lake Fairfax has a nice campground if you can get a reservation there and it is convenient also.

Parking in DC is hard to find, expensive and the meter maids are every where and write a ton of tickets every day. Lot of the parking is limited to certain hours between 9-4 and they tow your car if you don't make it back in time. You may get lucky and find a spot near where you want to be, but it could take time and patience to find the spot. I'm talking about on street parking. Parking garages are another story that begins with $$$$$$.

Enjoy DC, it is a great city and beautiful in the spring.

I would suggest a couple of different ones:
Along I-95
Aquia Pines Campground in Stafford County
Prince William Forest Park (Travel Trailer Village)
Bull Run (Regional Park)
There are other parks in Northern Virginia. None of these are near a metro, but they are closer than not. Hopefully you have a car to get ot the metro station.

Several places to south of DC that might fit.

Fredericksburg KOA is about 60 miles from DC. I volunteer at the National Battlefield Park there. Visitors often come in and say they are staying at the KOA. One problem is the commuter traffic; you need 3 people for the carpool lane.

Lake Anna SP is located west of I-95 somewhat south of Fred-Burg. I have never been there. One plan for this summer is to check this one out as it seems a nice place from the Internet description.

Pohick Bay Regional Park is located off US 1 just south of Fort Belvoir, about 15-20 miles from DC. The park has electric/water sites and may have some full hookups.

Prince William Forest NP is located just across from Quantico Marine Base (and Museum), about 30 miles south of DC on I-95. Oakridge Campground is only $15 per night but there are no services. There is a Travel Trailer Village concession located on Route-234 (road to Manassas) that charges $10 to dump.

Nothing fits perfectly but there are some alternatives that you can consider.

Cherry Hill RV Park is very close to Washington DC and they have transportation available to connect you to public transportation to get into the city. Bus tours also stop at the RV Park.

Here is a link to the Transportation Opportunities

We drove into the city and found parking around the Smithsonians fairly easy to find, maybe we were just lucky??? If you drive your toad into the city...BRING LOTS OF QUARTERS!

We did Travel Trailer Villiage with full hook ups at Prince William State Park. I don't remember whether or not there was a pool. The place was nice and clean. We drove to the Metro Station and took the train into the Mall where we saw the Smithsonian and the Monuments. You are more than welcome to look at what we did and photos on our website. Look under Adventures for the date 5/12/08-5/14/08.

There is a pool there. Not big, but there is a pool.

Plus, being at a National Park is a nice feeling.

We stayed at Aquia Pines in Stafford County a few years ago. Very quiet after a day in the city. Most days we would drive up to the nearest Metro park-n-ride. That gives you a chance to go in a little later to miss some of the traffic. Our kids enjoyed the pool, but it is a little tight in some of the spots with all the trees..

Just an FYI - avoid I-95 south of DC during just about any of the daytime hours. The only time we passed through there that I-95 was not the world's longest & narrowest parking lot was about 4 a.m.
