My instructions said to "purge" the brand new tanks of air before 1st use. How in the heck do you "purge" the tanks of air?
Especially now with the new safety valves that won't open up unless it's connected to a hose etc...

You fill the tank with a "squirt" of propane and then open the vent to purge the tank. When it's empty, continue to fill. This is how we did it where I worked and we had no problems.

Just fill it. I've never purged one in my life. And I filled lots of new ones. And when they wasn't lookin I even filled one that I built myself.

You don't purge it.
Take it to a propane supplier and tell them it's a new tank. They will know that it needs to be purged and will do so before filling it for you.
I suggest a full retail propane outlet..not a gas station where the attendant runs out and fills propane between selling beef jerky, beer and cigarettes.

The cylinders are filled with dried air to prevent internal rust. One shop in this area actually connects a vacuum pump and evacuates all the air out. Another just bleeds out this pressurized air, then fills it as usual.
I'm free of prostate cancer for 5 years now.
All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

New tanks are ALWAYS supposed to be purged. They should add some methanol (methal alcohol) then purge it with some mercaptan.
Now does everyone do this? I have never seen it done at small local filling stations. More than likely a propane company, (the big ones) will do this. The reason for the purging is to rid all air and moisture. The air and moisture kill the smell of the mercaptan.
If you don't smell the mercaptan, you will NEVER smell the gas.
By the way, it's a fact that women smell the mercaptan additive before men do.

I have always just had them filled and noticed no diference.
There was one post about putting in a little and then opening the valve to empty it. I don't know how long ago it was that you could have a tank filled that would discharge when the valve was opened. Maybe two generations back. I guess you could jury rig something to open the valve in the outlet, but like I mentioned, I am well into social security and have always just had new tanks filled.

Unless you purge the tank it will never be capable of holding the full or correct amount. You need to put a vacuum on it just as they do in air conditioning systems to balance the presures. The mercaptan is in the propane and not the tank. I know this because I worked for a large propane company here in the Puget Sound area for 2 years.
You only put methanol in the larger tanks not the little 20&30 pounders.

You all said its done to get the air out. So Just what do you suppose any tank is full of everytime it runs out of propane ? So now you're going to "purge" every tank that runs out of propane?,......yeah right !
The one that says the tank will never fill to its normal capacity unless you get it purged,......well that one beat them all. I've proved that wrong hundreds of times.
