No way RVing is alot cheaper than our last boat. We use to burn 25 gph at cruise.

If you think it is less expensive to RV than to take a car or fly you are wrong. Our rig is a 2006 2500hd and a 2006 35rls Jayco. just in fuel it now cost us just over $28.00 per hr to drive the rig. 10mpg $4.80 per gal. I can get up to 12mpg some times. Plus the cost of a camp spot. To fill up the truck at 30 Gal is $144 that will get us 300 miles to some that is a full day drive some will do more. Then add in the cost of the rig $85,000 over 15 years is $472 a month. plus upkeep, tires, ins etc. My truck is now parked just used for trips. I miss drivng the truck but the cars just cost a lot less to drive. I can take our car the same 300 mil trip for $47.00 and spend the $100 on a nice room. In Dec I went from CA to Fl for 10 days. Air,car, room for 2 people $1,300 to drive the same trip would cost more in time and money.
We do like to camp and know the cost to have fun and the upside to camping. But the cost are rising to fast last year it was less than $ 80.00 to fill up or $16.00 per Hr to run the rig.
Just my $.02

LOL! Yea! About boating? I have a real nice 24' day cruiser that I need to take out. I have not used it in a year. NOW that is a gas hog. Lots of fun, but man that is the most expensive toy I have ever bought.

I like your style....I`m going to pull this baby 835 miles next month. Oh ya, I get 5 miles to the gallon pulling and not even going to think about what I get in (Peaches) the boat.

This is NOT the time to sell. This is the time to BUY!!!

No doubt its a buyers market for stuff....for everything. Need a house, a car, and ATV..whatever. It's cheap. Check out Craigslist.

But to say people are dumping thier RV because it cost a lot to fill up is out in left field.

The cost of gas has killed the economy, which kills buyer confidence, which stops you from buying luxury items like RVs. So, there are more on the market because there are less buyers....not because people are dumping them cause it cost $25 more to fill up.

Now may not be quite the time to buy. Wait til next year. Or this fall.

You know in all seriousness, you are right. I have watched the prices drop dramatically on a lot of high end DPers just in the last 8 weeks. I think they will drop even more before things turn around.

That's the relationship I've started applying to our motor home ...

8 gph at 65 mph ...

Doesn't take a very big boat at all to suck more fuel than that.

Everyone has their own angle on this. If you are looking to justify the lifestyle, it's easy to find a way to do that.

How about this: I live on the west coast of Canada and I am half way through a trip down the west coast, across the south, up the east coast and back across the continent to BC. The coach is now in Florida and we will bring it up the east coast to New York next month - go home for 2 months, then go back to drive further north. Each MH session is 1-2 months. We should be back home some time in mid-2009.

So, this trip is about 10,000 miles. At $5/gal. and 8mpg, that's $6,250. We will be away for something like 7 months in total so that's about $30 per day for fuel. Add the $30 for camp fees and another $5 per day for maintenance, it's going to cost $65 per day. The flights average about $40 per day but I figure I would probably fly somewhere even if we were not doing this trip.

The last time I went to Europe (3 years ago) it cost us $400 per day for a 30 day trip. We saw some nice spots but no better than the many beautiful places in the US and Canada.

I figure that average coach depreciation (on a coach like ours, after the first 3 years) is about $15,000 per year. If I use it 100 days, that's $150 per day - a lot higher than the cost of fuel.

So, I think I should work on the daily cost of depreciation more than the cost of fuel since it's the higher cost. To do that, all I have to do is use it more - pretty easy solution!!!

And that's what I'm going to do!!!

I speculate those that are selling due to fuel costs are those that have not been out since fuel was $2 a gallon. If it has been sitting four or more years with only higher fuel in the crystal ball then they may as well sell it. I fugure the more you use it the lower your cost per day or mile.
