Human perception is very strange thing. You don't notice pregnant women on the streets till your wife, or somebody close is pregnant. The same with slow drivers. They always exist. Occasionally I drive with hard to secure load, like door on the roof of sedan, or 5 tons of concrete junk on 1-ton pickup. On those occasions I drive 55 mph and don't wont anybody behind me. More or less almost always some people will stay behind me and will not pass me even if I slow down to 45 mph. It's been like that for Century. Thanks for noticing.

They're still driving all crazy around here and we have some of the highest gas prices in the nation.

I drive as little as possible, try to be smart about planning errand trips ahead for greatest economy and keep the speed down to somewhere around the speed limit.

LOL!! I hate to stereotype, but that segment of the driving public is prominent during my daily commute as well. It is a scary thought what kind of MPG they get. Obviously they don't care about that, however, because they are too busy playing the "look at me, macho dominant alpha male" role.

As long as I am stereotyping here, I have also noticed two other main, "speed at all cost" groups of commuters.

One is the small, four cylinder coupe or sedan type with those huge, aftermarket "performance" mufflers hanging off the back. Looks dumb, sounds dumb. These commuters like to keep up with the 4x4's.

The other group is the "beater" car. Any old, preferably early to mid eighties, domestic sedan. Normally, one taillight is out, the headliner is hanging down in back, and there is noticeable body damage. Cigarettes are often seen tossed from the window.

The Province of Ontario is introducing legislation that will require ALL transport trucks registerd in Ontario to install engine speed controlers that will limit truck road speed to 105 kph ( about 62 mph ) .

Ontario all ready has a "racing " law that results in roadside vehicle seizure, and driver's licence suspension, if you are clocked at 50 kph ( 30 miles per hour ) over the posted speed limit. This applies to ALL speed limits, city or highway. The maximum fine for "racing " is $10,000 and the destruction of the seized car by crushing. BTW this law does NOT require that there be two cars involved, the speed being driven is the factor.

In the first month after this was put into law, there were over 2,000 seizures, and convictions. Now the effect is being seen, in the lower average speeds and the numbers being charged under the racing section of the highway traffic act.

LOL Walter!!! You did a pretty good job stereotyping even if you forgot a few......

How about the red two seater convertibles often times driven by a man, let's just nicely say he's beyond middle age.... He has the top down, pony tail blowing in the wind, sun block on top of his head where he no longer grows hair, and he's zooming down the road, only slowing down a bit to smile & wave to the ladies. I see a few of them on my way around town almost every day. He might be saving fuel by driving his little sporty two seater but I have to think he just likes to drive so drive he does... with no particular place to go.

Sometimes we see the young redneck woman, with three (to five) kids in the front seat of her late 70's model pick up truck. She's looking cute in her tight jeans & boots while the truck belches out black smoke...she puts a quart of oil in every day and keeps taking the kiddos to school, ball practice, etc. as fast as the truck will go on the three bald tires, the good one's the spare. Not sure about the gas mileage since the fuel gauge doesn't work.... she gets around that by putting in $30.00 worth every other day.

Then there is the a bit beyond middle aged woman who has the big honking SUV. Why you say? Because the younger soccer moms all got one a few years ago and she wanted one, too. She drives it everywhere, usually alone, can barely park the thing even in the largest of spaces, but keeps right on driving it to "do lunch" and running errands at around 8-10 mpg on a good day.

Freeway speed varies greatly with these types.... but as far as saving fuel, well probably not.

There..... now maybe we've managed to offend a few more folks.

In the Dallas/Ft. Worth area the traffic is going even faster. The speed goes up with the cost of fuel........??????

I am still laughing! Haha!

Forgot one other group. The highly self-important yuppies driving 3-series BMW sedans and SUV's, small Lexus sedans and SUV's and, to a lesser degree, small Inifinity sedans and SUV's. These people seem to think they have much more important places to go than anyone else on the road and must cut in front of everyone, ride everyone's bumper, and drive minimum 15 mph over any posted speed limit.

Don't forget the 300+ HP Cadillacs that on 30 seconds green light barely make it alone and will not let to pass anybody behind them.

My wife and I went to Charleston, SC last week and we were on I20 and I26 I noticed that folks were driving somewhat slower. I notice things like this because of what I did for a living for thirty years. I will tell you this that the drivers from Ga have a MUCH heavier foot followed by Fla folks. If you are in the Atlanta Metro area you better be prepared to drive above the speed limit or they will just run you over.
