Hello everyone, I am new to RVing. I have a 2007 27RB Salem camper. I have towed it several times since I got it in Feb. It does great on two lane roads. When ever I get on the inerstate it seems to move around a lot. It is fine unless I get near anything big, then I seem to be sucked towards it. I have towed many large trailers, but they were all open. This is the first closed in type of trailer that I have towed. I have a Reese dual cam WD hitch. I'm towing with a 2007 Chevy 1500 crew cab z71. If this is normal I'm ok with it, but if there is something I can do to help it I would love to try it. Thanks for any help.

Looks like you have sway control installed. Some tweaking needed perhaps?
See sway control

Also, how is the load in the trailer, centered over the wheel?

Here is some info:

Well should the trailer get pulled toward large trucks? The weight in the trailer is centered over the wheels.

We have the Wildwood 27RB. Last year on Interstate to Michigan, kept getting sucked into passing lane when trucks or other RV's came by. Was really a windy day, gusting 35-40 from the West side. Learned to watch the Driver mirror more and when I saw them coming, would hug the right side whiteline. That helped some.

This year I got more weight transferred to the front axle, sits much better now, axle drop equal within 1/4" front to back. Tows better. Using the Equal-i-zer.

My trailer is tongue-light, so I had the same issues. On our last trip, I filled our 40g FW tank (ahead of the axles) before heading out and it towed like a dream.

Read the info here:
Trailer Loading and Towing Guide
and here:
RV Towing Tips
Should help you solve your issues. Also do a search in this forum for Reese Dual Cam setup. (and the various abbreviations) There are some folks that have a lot of experience with the DC and the setup. (if your dealer set up the DC make sure you redo all the setup).
Good Luck!

I agree with CampSight - sounds like you need more weight on the hitch. This will help your dual-cam, too.

Good luck!

What I do when a semi is going to pass me on the freeway is slow down about 5 mph and when the semi is just at the rear of my trailer I slowly speed up and have found this to work against the sucking in effect.

Sounds perfectly normal from what I can remember pulling with a half ton. I just learned to watch the mirrors, and be ready for it. I don't notice it as bad with my new tv.

Jeff,

As stated earlier, the "bow wave" effect that you are experiencing is normal. IMO the best way to minimize this effect is when you realize that you are going to be passed by a large vehicle (semi, motorhome, etc.), stay to the right allowing as much space between you and the passing vehicle. Also maintain your towing speed and be mindful to not "oversteer" in an attempt to counter the effect. I tend to keep my TV/TT in a straight line without having to make any steering corrections while experiencing a minor "bow wave" from a passing vehicle.

If you have the Reese HP Dual Cam hitch, the lower section of this Towing forum STICKY will walk you through the adjustment process to insure that your Dual Cam system is adjusted correctly for optimum TV/TT handling characteristics.
