Here's a new one to me. I brought this used Fifth-Wheel home about a month ago and started noticing a bad odor around the Extended Pin Box. It was so bad that I was sure a critter had crawled in there to die. I used the hose to wash out the inside and that reduced the odor to the point it smelled more like mothballs so I got a flashlight and mirror to look inside. I saw 3 mothballs. There were no bird or chipmunk bodies (or moths) so I guess they're doing their job but they really smell.
Has anybody heard of this or used mothballs this way? I never heard of this with my previous fifth wheels.
Is this a recommended practice?

I don't know but if it keeps the birds from building a nest in the pinbox I'm going to put some in mine. Thanks for the tips.

You're welcome. I was thinking I might take the mothballs out and cram some spare 1/2" grid screen in the opening with regular small screen over it to keep the mud-daubers from nesting.
I think I'll just ignore that one and add this update.
It's been a couple of days since I hosed out the pin box and the smell has really been reduced. Now I can't smell 'those things' unless I'm within about 3 feet and then they just smell like a couple of 'those things.'
I still don't know if 'those things' are useful or not but I guess I'll leave them there.
We have been putting moth balls in all our RV's for years and have never had any problem with any mice or other varmints make it their winter home. Smell goes away in the first week of the spring. I'm sure others have their way, but this works good for us.
I throw them up under the house to keep snakes and mice and skunks away. They do have an odor but not that of something dead. I am wondering if the previous owner had a problem with a dead animal and put the moth balls there in an attempt to mask the smell.
