If you are not suppose to clean a cast iron pan with water how do you clean it.

If you cook meat you will need to use hot soapy water; when I cook bread I just clean with hot water. If it's rusty, another thread said to use Coca cola.

We wash ours but make sure to dry it well. If you've got a campfire going, setting it near the fire can help dry it out. We always wipe down with food grade mineral oil when dry. DW says the mineral oil won't go rancid. When baking, we alway line with a piece of wide aluminum foil. Makes cleanup much easier.

I clean mine with water every time. I like to heat it up and pour some water in so it really boils or steams. I use tongs to run a small rag or in rough cases I use a small green scratchy thing. The hot water and steam cleans the cast iron nicely. When done I make sure it is heated and apply a light coating of any cooking oil. Light coating. I like to wipe it out with newspaper. It should shine nicely. When things get really crusty I drop the cast iron in a hot fire and let it cook clean. Pull off and let cool until water drops dance around the iron. Wipe clean with a towell and tongs. Add oil as mentioned.

That was something I thought when I first started using cast iron. I just couldn't understand how you could clean something without water! Since those early days, I've learned a lot.

Water is NOT the enemy when it comes to cast iron. However, you DO need to be careful.

You do NOT, under any circumstances, want to let your cast iron soak in water overnight. If you have something stuck onto the cast iron, simply fill it with water and put it back on your heat source. Let the water heat to boiling and use a rubber spatula to scrape and lift off the stuck on food.

Once you've got most of the stuck on food off, using a pair of heavy duty (welder's type) gloves and dump the water and set the piece aside until it's cool enough to touch.

Once it's cool enough to touch, you should be able to use a scrubbie of some sort and some hot water to remove any other baked on food.

Once you've gotten all the stuck on food removed, go head and put it back on the heat source (a 250 degree oven is good, or close to your campfire) to dry the cast iron. Once the cast iron is dry, put a coating of oil or cast iron seasoning on the cast iron and put it away. You'll be good to go until the next time, when the above process is repeated.

Hope that helps!

Julie

I clean mine by boiling water in it and then use a brush to release any particles. If I have any stubborn debris I use a plastic scrubbing pad.

If its seasoned properly there should be no need for soap. Soap removes the thin coat of oil thats left over to become another coat of seasoning.

My wife cleans hers with salt and a paper towel, hers never touches water. I tried to be a good husband one time, and wash dishes to include her cast iron skillet in soap and water. I was in the doghouse for a month. She had to season it all over again.
