I'm sure everyone here has heard of Magic Jack VOIP. I know many are or were skeptical as I was so I decided to try it and give it a whirl. I was amazed. Instead of posting the whole project again here I've provided a link below. Some may have tried it and didn't like it or had problems, so all I can do is report MY findings and success. It has saved me big time over the last month on cell time especially those long duration calls to me bro on IT stuff. It does have some minimum requirements and has worked like a charm for me. One thing I'll ad here and go back and ad to the report in a it is that as in everything we do an with computers an occasional reboot of the cpu as well as Magic Jack software seems help in keeping things trouble free. A sort of maintenance item if you will..

1. Cost....
MagicJack is half the cost of shype
2. Skype is software based where as MagicJack is Hardware based. The usb modem can be plugged into any of your computers and very mobile. MagicJack has no software to load. You can carry the thing (usb modem) around in your shirt pocket and plug it into any computer such as a friends or work computer and not have to load software. It's device based.
3. I found MagicJack's performance with evdo broadband definitely better quality. when I tried Skype with my evdo is was choppy with some latency. MagicJack there is none for me.
4. 911 service is available in most instances with MagicJack where as it is not with Skype. You 911 location can be manually changed by you when you move.
As for the real technical end? I'll leave it to an "expert". I've tried Vonage which is way too expensive and not mobile compared to MagicJack and it simply out performed Skype for me anyway hands down and again it's half the cost of Skype.

Bought it for a bridge in home phone service after SunRocket bit the dust and we were waiting to come up on ViaTalk. Haven't used it in several months, but I gave it a number where my mother lives so she can call us free (have it forwarding to our home phone). The few times we used it, it worked fine.

OK It looks pretty good so far. Currently (at home) I use a Wild Blue satellite link with a wireless router. Works ok but I would like to switch to the Verizon 5g plan with their EVDO antenna attached to a Cradlepoint router so both of us (wife) can access the web wirelessly as we do now. It sounds like the MagicJack is the icing on the cake. The question is having the MagicJack plugged into the computor which is communicating wirelessly to the router ok? Is 54.0mb sufficient bandwidth for voice transmission? Will it work on a WEP encrypted router?
I would like to also use it in my RV when camped as most campgrounds have pretty pitiful or non-existent Wi-Fi...
I also heard the 3gstore.com is a pretty reputable outfit to deal with. Any opinions?

Yes to all your questions.....
I run a Cradle Point MBR 1000 with a Sprint U727 and yes it is plugged into the primary wireless computer. Works fine with any of the encryption settings, WEP, WPA ect. You can't go wrong with the folks at 3G. I;ve bought 2 routers now from them and their support id great. I wouldn't go any other way than the 3G Store. It didn't work well with my satellite (Hughes) which was too slow and too much latency, but works great with my Sprint EVDO. It is a nice thing not to have to depend on park wi-fi systems. I took MagicJack with me one day to the local park and my 1 ghz cordless phone which was fully charged and ate lunch sitting there in the park on the water front making calls. sure got a few weird looks as noticed it was a cordless phone and not a cell. had a few stop and ask me how I was doing that lol!
I might ad though if Sprint is available in your area I'd suggest them as their data plan is a true unlimited plan. No FAP or cap on bandwidth like Verizon. If you don't use or come close to the 5 GB per month Verizon would be fine. 3G can tell you whats available in your specific area.
