Had a lady here in the park that had just bought a new Casitas. Somehow she managed to lock herself out of her trailer. She wanted me to see if i could get the door off. Before i grabbed my tools i tried my rv keys on her lock. Should of seen the look on her face when my keys worked, Then i realized her key would work in my door! . I think you need to change your locks for a really secure RV.

Hi All.

...It is a shame though, that 40+ years ago, you didn't have to worry about locking anything up. But today it is so much different than 40+ years ago. ....

40 years ago was the 60's. We did a lot of camping back then and always had to lock up valuables in the car whenever we left camp. We left camp one time and came back to find the ice box emptied and the camp fuel gone. After checking with the park ranger we found out that a group of younger people (known as hippies in those days) were living in a neighboring campground. They would go through the campsites when people were gone and pilfer food and fuel. Later that week we watched them go through the campground and steal some food from another group. That was in the days before cell phones, so, after Dad and I yelled and scared them off, we drove 10 miles to the nearest phone and called the police, leaving statements with them. Not sure anything happened.

Oh, and want to know why the Forest Service put short time limits on campgrounds? Yep, the 60's. You almost couldn't visit a campground without finding some group living there. They'd pick up in the middle of the week and move to the next site when the 21 day limit was close.

Being a bit more benevolent in those days I'd frequently offer them the fish I caught that day (I was in my teens). Most were ecstatic to receive them. I couldn't imagine staying at a stream that was stocked with trout and then steal food because you couldn't figure out how to fish. And, in those days were was no shortage of firewood if you had an axe so don't know why they stole the fuel too.

So, it isn't much different after 40 years, just we have a fiver instead of a tent

I lock my MH door when it's in my driveway now ... to keep my 12-year-old daughter away from my chocolate stash.

Don't yell at me - my boyfriend tells me to lock it all the time, and when we're traveling together, he takes it upon himself to be in charge of locked doors. We each think the other is nuts - but he has more evidence than I do.

We lock anytime we are not in sight of the unit. Locking only keeps the mostly honest people out. I have seen high school aged children walk through a parking lot and try every car door they come to. I suppose if they find an unlocked one they have a look around inside.

I have a private garage I keep mine in....remote controlled door...but I only lock the coach door and leave the basement doors unlocked...after replacing ONE basement door for $2800 I figger I'd rather replace only ONE door if a boogie man gets in...

I figure it's simple. Serious "professional" thieves may break into my MH, car, or home regardless of what I do or don't do to dissuade them from breaking in.

But the opportunist? Folks looking for easy cash, booze or portable electronics? They'll just try the door. If mine is locked, armed, with the "Dog on Premises" sign in the window, they'll likely move on to YOUR unlocked RVs, car or home.

Always.

We lock it when it is sitting right out in the drive. We lock it when we are at a CG and take a walk.

Yes. At all times. As mentioned, for insurance purposes.

When camping we are usually with a group and we still keep it locked. But this time it's so some one won't open the door and accidentally let one of our 3 cats out. Too many coyotes in Southern California.

Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't.

Most thieves look for things they can put their hands on quickly, and turn around for cash quickly. That being the case, a good way to minimize the damage a thief could do to you in your RV: Don't keep anything in the RV that they would want in the first place.

There is very little in our trailer a potential thief would want. No cash, no jewelry, no TVs, no DVD players, no video games...none of that stuff. If a thief ever went into our TT, they'd leave bitterly disappointed. Yeah, they might take the CD player/stereo, but that'd be an awful lot of work to remove it (its permanently installed/mounted), for something thats specifc to an RV and wouldnt net them much $$.

Still, we lock ours when parked at the house, not 'cause of thieves, but more out of concern that local teenagers might decide it'd be fun to sneak in, and do who-knows-what in there. LOL, I was once a teenager, and I know what goes through their minds.

When camping...sometimes we lock it when we leave the site, sometimes we don't, just depends on where we are, what we have in the camper, etc. Generally speaking, when we leave the camper, we have all valuables with us, so there again, there's very little in the TT that would be of much value to the common thief. we still lock it, usually, though, 'cause you never know when there might be a more 'un-common' thief around that would take other things (like your beer, food, etc)
